Description, claims and drawings

Disclaimer: This text has been machine-scanned and may contain errors – please refer to "Publications" for legally binding content. Description
The invention regards a surgical light source. Further, the invention regards a surgical light source which is suitable for using in the field, for example in military field hospitals or field hospitals during humanitarian crises and natural disasters. A surgical light – also referred to as an operating light or surgical light head – is a medical device intended to assist medical personnel during a surgical procedure by illuminating a local area or cavity of the patient. A combination of several surgical lights is often referred to as a “surgical light system”.Traditionally, hospital surgical lights comprise individual light panels connected to arms having joints in order to be able to position the light panels over the patient in the area that is to be operated. In particular, in emergency surgery, it may be vital to be able to operate on more than one area of the patient simultaneously. In order to achieve this, there are often arranged several arms with respective light panels on the surgical light system, where the arms may be positioned individually. In this way one arm may direct a panel to illuminate one part of the body and another arm may direct another panel to illuminate another part of the body. Such systems are both expensive, require much free space above the surgical table, and require much maintenance.CN 204730030 describes a modular operation lighting device with LED lights designed to be mounted in the ceiling of an operating theatre.CN 203273445 describes a LED module for an operation LED lamp. The LED modules are arranged in a circular ring in order to provide deep depth of focus. US 2016/0097518 describes a surgical lamp using LED modules, where the LED modules may be disconnected and reconnected according to the need, and where the angle of the LED modules may be changed by using a motor in order to change the focus of the light.US 4025778 describes a multi lamp system for providing shadowless illumination. The multiple lamps can be angled to adjust the depth of field.US 2005/0195599, US 5526245, US 4930058, and US 2011/0019416 are other examples of lamps.A further issue is surgical lights for use in the field, for example in military field hospitals or field hospitals during humanitarian crises and natural disasters. In such situations, there is a need for equipment that may be installed quickly, use little electrical power, and which is easy to disinfect and has a compact size.An object of the invention is to provide a modular surgical light which can be used in the field, but which also fulfils the requirements for surgical lights in regular hospitals. A further object is to provide a modular surgical light which can focus illumination on more than one area of the patient. The object of the invention is achieved by means of the features of the patent claims. In one embodiment a modular surgical light comprises at least one light source module and a frame. The at least one light source module is mounted releasable and movable in the frame and comprises an electrical connector for transferring electrical signals and power to the frame. The light source module comprises at least one LED or an assembly of LEDs. The LEDs are connected to suitable electronics for driving and controlling the LEDs. At least some of the electronics are located in the light source module and are connected to a power source through the electrical connection to the frame. The electrical connection to the frame may be any suitable electrical connection, for example a kind of plug and socket connector. In one embodiment the electrical connection is a plug and socket connector with a number of pins, where the number of pins is adapted to the requirements of the control electronics. In one embodiment the number of pins is larger than the actual need, in order to provide redundancy and make the light source module less prone to failure. The electric connector may be a waterproof connector in order to provide protection during washing, spilling of fluids or other environmental challenges. The electric connector may also be corrosion resistant, for example by gold plating, or producing it from corrosion resistant materials. In the case of more than one light source module electrically connected to the frame, the electric connectors may be connected in parallel, ensuring that the failure of one light source module will not cause failure to the other light source modules. The light source module further comprises a cover covering the LEDs and the electronics. In order to drain heat from the electronics, the cover may be in thermal contact with the LEDs/electronics, and/or there may be provided a thermal conductive material, for example a thermal paste, between the LEDs/electronics and the cover. The cover itself and its interface towards the LEDs may be watertight, thus sealing the electronics towards the environment. The light source module comprises a connection device for connecting to the frame. The connection device is fastened to, or an integral part of, the cover.Further the light source module may comprise a handle protruding outward from the cover. The handle is arranged to assist when releasing the light source module from the frame. The frame is shaped to receive and hold the desired number of light source modules. In one embodiment the frame is adapted to receive at least two light source modules arranged symmetrically around a symmetry point or symmetry plane. In another embodiment the frame is adapted to receive at least three light source modules arranged symmetrically around a symmetry point. The symmetrical design makes the surgical light easy to handle and position in the correct location and position. The frame comprises connection devices for receiving and holding the light source modules, the number of connection devices corresponding to the number of light source modules for the surgical light. The frame connection devices are shaped complementary to connection sections of the light source modules, such that the light source module may be inserted into the connection devices of the frame to provide a secure connection between the light source module and the frame. The connection devices may for example be snap connections, swan socket connections, clamps, groove and tongue connection, etc., and/or a combination of such arrangements. In one embodiment the connection device comprises two tongues arranged at each side of the receiving area of the frame, and a clamp, where the light source module comprises complementary grooves for receiving the tongues and a notch for receiving the clamp. The possibility of releasing the light source module from the frame and inserting the same or a new light source module in the same location, provides the modularity of the surgical light. The modularity has several advantages, such as:- Free exchange and use of light source panels with different light properties (i.e. white light of different colour temperatures, ultraviolet light, infrared light) in the same Centre module- light source panel failure during use of the surgical lamp does not affect functionality of the remaining light panels.- Fast and hot-swap replacement of light source panels by non-technical personnel without the use of tools- Possibility of use of single light source panel as single standalone light unit for a number of purposes where small and portable high quality medical light unit is desirable. Examples of such situations are during MEDEVAC – Medical Evacuation, patient transportation, in medical examination theatres/offices, small surgery, outdoor/field use, veterinary indoor and outdoor use and more. The frame comprises in one embodiment a center module and one or more rotary sockets for receiving the light source modules. The rotary socket is a part of the frame which as arranged rotatable or tiltable with respect to the center module of the frame. In this embodiment, each light source module is individually movable, which enables the operator to direct the light from the individual light source modules to separate positions. This feature is useful if it is necessary to operate in more than one part of the patient simultaneously. For example, the light source modules connected to the center module can be tilted individually in the range of 45°, for example from -8° to+37°, or more relative to the center module. This unique function provides the user with ability to illuminate 2 or even 3 separate areas on patient’s body from one central light. This allows that more than one surgeon can operate simultaneously on a patient’s body. The frame may in one embodiment comprise an interface for connecting to an arm. In one embodiment, the cover comprises cooling ribs on its outside. The Cooling ribs may cover the complete cover, or the ribs may be located on the outer surface on the opposite side of the LEDs. The cooling ribs are parallel ribs reaching over the diameter of the light source module and are thermally connected to the cover and thus to the driving electronics of the LEDs. The cooling ribs are designed with a shape and size to facilitate them being washable/ cleanable. In one embodiment, the distance between each rib is adapted to have room for a finger of an operator, i.e. the distance between ribs should be larger than an average to thick finger of a male. According to The Handbook of Adult Anthropometric and Strength Measurements, by the Department of Trade and Industry in the United Kingdom, the average width of a male index finger is 18.3 mm, and the distance between ribs can for example be between 15 mm and 25 mm, for example 20 mm.Both the light source module and the frame are produced from materials that are safe from, and durable when exposed to, dust and water, and which thus can be thoroughly washed by using water and/or chemicals, and/or decontaminated. Also the light source module and frame are sealed in order to make them washable and able to be decontaminated when necessary. All elements may be adapted to be washed in a medical decontamination washing machine. In one embodiment the modular surgical lamp and/or the elements of the lamp is/are at least IP65 rated. The light has low weight and small size, is modular and designed for easy packaging and transportation. The surgical light may further be adapted to withstand other environmental challenges, such as: G-shock, vibration, fall from height, temperature ranges for storage and use, IP classification and EMC.The invention will now be described in more detail, by means of examples and by reference to the accompanying figures.Figure 1 shows an example of an embodiment of a modular surgical light according to the invention.Figure 2 shows the lamp of figure 1 with one light source module released.Figure 3 shows a detail of the embodiment in figure 1. Figure 4 shows an embodiment of one single light source module for use in the invention. The modular surgical light 10 in the example of figure 1 comprises three light source modules 12, 12’ and a frame 11. The three light source modules 12 are mounted releasable and movable in the frame 11. Figure 2 shows the same embodiment of the surgical light as in figure 1, but in this figure one of the light source modules 12’ has been released from the frame 11.The light source modules are in this embodiment arranged symmetrically in the frame, and the frame has similarly a symmetrical design. The symmetrical design makes it easy to handle the surgical light when it is used in the operating theatre/room.As can be seen most clearly in figure 2, the frame comprises electrical connectors 19 which are adapted to receive a corresponding electrical connector on the light source modules. The connector 17 on the light source modules can be seen in figure 4. The electrical connector can transfer electrical signals and/or power to and from the frame, which is further connected to other electronics and power source. The frame 11 comprises a center module 21 and a rotary socket 15 for receiving the light source modules. The rotary socket 15 is connected to the center module 21 by rotation arms 19, which ensures that it is rotatable or tiltable with respect to the center module of the frame 11. When the light source module is mounted in the frame 11, it can thus be moved by tilting it. Each light source module 12, 12’, 12’’ can be moved/rotated/tilted individually in the frame. This means that the individual light source modules may be angled differently, thus directing the light from the modules to different locations. Figure 3 shows one light source module 12 tilted an angle of 37° with respect to the frame 11.The rotary socket 15 and the light source modules 12 comprise complimentary shaped connection devices, which secures the light source modules in correct position. The complimentary shaped connection devices are in this example a kind of snap connections, where the protrusions 20 fit into recesses 16, and a clamp 22 clamps onto a recess 23.The frame further comprises an interface 13 for connecting to an arm. The arm may be suspended in the ceiling or wall, such as in regular operating theatres/rooms. Alternatively, the arm may have a basis on the floor, fixed or movable, for support. As another alternative, the arm may be adapted to be fixed directly on a stretcher or operating table rail such that it does not restrict or disturb the movement of the doctors and other personnel working in the operating area. As can be seen in figure 4, the light source modules 12 comprises three groups of LEDs 24 symmetrically arranged on one side of the light source module. Each group of LEDs comprises 7 LEDs. In other embodiments, the number of LED groups and LEDs may be different from this example. The light source modules also comprise a cover connected to the LEDs and enclosing and sealing the electronics of the LED. A handle 14 protrudes outwards from the cover and can be used for easy mounting and removing the light source module 12 from the frame, as well as for easy transportation of a single light source module. The cover comprises cooling ribs 18 on its outside, on the surface facing away from the LEDs, and contributes to maintaining an ideal operating temperature for the LEDs. The cooling ribs 18 increase the surface of the cover and thus the cover’s ability to transport heat away from the electronics inside the cover. The cooling ribs are spaced with a distance similar to the diameter of a human finger in order to facilitate cleaning of the surface of the light source module. For the same purpose the complete modular surgical light, or at least the cover of the light source modules is produced in a material which is durable when exposed to water and cleaning chemicals.
