Description, claims and drawings

TECHNICAL FIELDThe present invention relates to the field of insulation of basins that houses water valves, fittings and equipment for connection of water pipe lines. More specifically, the invention relates to an attachment device for installing a cover structure in a man hole opening, a man hole assembly comprising the cover structure and a method for installing the cover structure in the man hole opening.A water basin or a catch basin is typically provided as a concrete riser and has the customary arrangement of a man hole for permitting access to the interior of the basins and the lower structure of the basin and the conduit network, couplings, valves, fittings and equipment as housed in the basin. The interior of the basin is customary closed off by a cover installed at the top opening of the man hole. The cover may be provided in concrete or metal such as steel or any other material having the adequate strength for resisting pressure impact from the weight of soil and gravel heaped onto the basin or other impacts from the surroundings such as personnel treading on to the cover. The riser elements employed at top part of the concrete riser may have cylindrical shape or a conical configuration for instance an eccentric or concentric shape. In an eccentric design, the top access hole is positioned asymmetric at one side. In a centric or concentric basin, the cone shape tapers uniformly outwards in its height direction from manhole towards the ground. The top portion of the man hole may have an inner cylindrical configuration or an inner conical configuration. The inner walls of the top portion of the manhole may be provided with an inner metallic liner and arranged with an inner circumferential flange for receiving the manhole top cover or no metallic liner be provided. When the man hole top cover is made of metal an inner metallic liner is employed in the top portion of the man hole. The top cover is then installed in the inner liner for instance on a shoulder formed in the inner liner. The inner metallic liner may have an inner configuration defining a conical hole through the liner. When made of concrete no inner liner is present and the circumferential parts of top cover rests exteriorly to the manhole on top of the basin supported by the structures surrounding the man hole.BACKGROUNDWater pipe lines are usually located at a frost-free depth, and in addition a preventive flow of water is let through the water lines to avoid freezing the waterlines. The water basin is considered the critical point as parts of the water basin are positioned above the frost-free ground and thus is exposed to frost. The configuration of the basin may act as a funnel. When the temperature drops below zero and the funnel effect directs the cold air down to the lower structure there is a risk that the freezing of the equipment housed in the water basin may occur. The problem seems especially explicit in end basins.During the previous winter seasons the problem of frosting has been even more distinctive as long periods of unusual low temperature have been occurring in parts of the country where such cold periods have been quite uncommon. The cold has resulted in damages to equipment and periods without water being delivered to the consumer.Based on these reoccurring problems the need for providing frost protection for the waters basins has risen as a current topic that needs to be addressed. In accordance with prior art several attempts have been made to provide a sufficient solution to the problem. One approach includes letting the water run to maintain the circulation and avoid freezing. In accordance with another approach an arrangement for insulation has been provided to isolate the cold from entering the basin. The basin has been insulated from the outside by the use of plates for instance xps (extruded polysturen) that would need to be shaped to fit with the basin. The idea when insulating the exterior of the basin is to maintain the warmth from the ground within the basin and to prevent the cold from entering the equipment accommodated in the basin. For adequate insulation it is thus necessary to provide a tight fitting insulation structure that encloses the basin and it is also necessary to insulate the top portion of the man holes. In order to provide sufficient insulation to the basin an insulation cover is provided in addition to the tight fitting insulation structure that encloses the basin exteriorly. The insulation cover is customary installed below the man hole top cover to ensure that the warmth from the ground is maintained within the basin and to prevent the cold from entering the equipment accommodated in the basin. The insulation cover is installed interiorly in the top portion of the man hole on bearing brackets projecting from the inner wall of the manhole. If an inner lining is employed the brackets is formed as part of the inner liner and projects radially inwards therefrom.A major drawback with the bearing brackets projecting from the inner wall of the manhole is that the bearing brackets are formed as a permanent installation in the manhole, and when personnel need to enter the basin through the manhole, the projection of bearing brackets into the manhole is a hindrance for unobstructed access to the basin. Due to the small diameter of the man hole the presence of bearing brackets projecting into the manhole restricts the available access area considerably, and personnel which is to enter the basin is reluctant to do so.The following publications show examples of attachment devices for inner securing of covers; JP 2003239313, JP 2003213711, JP 2000064324 and JP 2007277857.An object of the present invention is to solve, or at least substantially alleviate, the above-described disadvantages of the prior art solution.SUMMARYThe invention concerns an attachment device for installing a cover structure in a man hole opening, a man hole assembly and a method for installing a cover structure with in a man hole opening has been set forth in the independent claims. Further additional features are set forth in the dependent claims. The invention is applicable both in basins having a man hole opening with a top portion with an inner cylindrical configuration or with a conical configuration, and is employable both when an inner liner is employed and when no liner is present and the concrete walls are exposed. When defining the solution for installing a cover structure in a man hole opening, the term “attachment device” has been used, as this term is considered to describe both the structural build up and the function of this device when employed to install the cover structure in a man hole opening. Terms analog to the attachment device include; clips, fastening device, clamp etc is also suitable for describing the characteristics and function of the attachment device. In accordance with the invention an attachment device for installing a cover structure in a man hole opening is provided. The attachment device comprises-a receiving structure comprising a pair of distanced essentially parallel arms and an intermediate leg arranged between the parallel arms. The internal surfaces of the parallel arms and the intermediate leg define an insert opening for receiving at least a portion of the cover structure. The attachment device further comprises a securing structure comprising a distance member projecting as an extension in the axial direction of either of the parallel arms, and a resilient member arranged at the end of the distance member distal from theparallel arms. In an unstressed state the resilient member extends from the distance member in an angular position where a distance between the resilient member and the intermediate leg is larger at the terminal end of the resilient member than a distance between the resilient member and the intermediate leg proximate to the distance member. In a stressed state the distance between the terminal end of the resilient member and the intermediate leg is smaller than the same distance in the unstressed state and when used in an installation position in the man hole opening a resilient force of the resilient member works against the inner wall of a man hole opening. The unstressed state may be defined as an initial configuration of an attachment device where no externally applied force works on the attachment device for deforming the resilient member of the attachment device (or other parts of the attachment device). In the stressed state an externally applied force works on the attachment device and deform the resilient member temporarily, the resilient member attempts to regain its unstressed state and consequently exerts a resilient force which is transferred as a frictional force in contact with for instance an inner wall of the man hole opening. The attachment device is preferably manufactured in a material having both rigid and flexible characteristics so that sufficient elasticity of certain parts of the attachment device such as the resilient member allows for a resilient deformation when a certain force is applied to the attachment device, while the remaining body of attachment device needs to hold its initial configuration intact. The initial configuration is regained when the external impact is removed. Various plastic material such as a polymer, thermoplastic, polyamide, POM (Polyoxymethylene) may be suitable for the manufacturing of the attachment devices to produce pieces with the mentioned material characteristics, and a manufacture method suitable for producing the attachment devices in larger quantities may be considered beneficial. The configuration and size of the cover structure is estimated so that it fits into the man hole opening filling most of the man hole opening if desirable. Due to the presence of the attachment devices when installed in the man hole opening, a gap will appear between the cover structure and the wall of the man hole opening, this gap may optionally be filled with a suitable filler material such as a fabric, a rope or an insulation material. The cover structure may of course also have a dimension that is much smaller than the man hole opening or the shape of the cross section of the cover structure may be different or slightly from that of the man hole opening. The cover structure may comprise various elements suitable for installing in a man hole opening or other openings where a cover is needed. In particular a cover structure of a light weight material may be suitable, such as insulating cover structure to be placed below a top cover structure as described earlier, but also cover structures with other functions than insulation may be suitable for installing by the attachment devices. In principle the cover structure is shaped with an upper surface, a lower surface and an peripheral surface. The cover structure may have the shape of a disc with a circular cross section, but other shapes may also be suitable here even plate structures with polygon or a quadratic cross section, depending on the field of use. In accordance with one embodiment of the attachment device, the distance between the parallel arms may correspond essentially to a thickness of a portion of the cover structure and the parallel arms are provided to engage the cover structure when received in the insert opening. By this configuration the proper mounting of attachment devices is ensured, and if the cover structure has a disk shape, the parallel arms may provide support to the upper surface, the lower surface (circular end surfaces if the cover structure is a disk). The thickness of the cover structure may correspond to the extension of cover structure in the axial direction and may also correspond to the distance between the arms, ensuring a secure engagement between the cover structure and the attachment devices. To improve the engagement between the arms and the surface of the cover structure, one or both arms may be provided with frictional means such as lugs, coating etc for enhanced frictional engagement with the cover structure. In accordance with an embodiment of the attachment device the terminal end of one or both arms may have a chamfered configuration defining a funnel shaped opening into the insert opening. An advantage of this configuration is that the mounting of the attachment devices to the cover structure is facilitated when the cover structure (such as a circumferential portion of the cover structure) is to be inserted into the insert opening. In accordance with an embodiment of the attachment device the axial extensions (lengths) of the two arms may be essentially equal. In some embodiments the axial extensions or the lengths of the arms may be different from one another. The invention also comprises a man hole assembly comprising- a man hole opening defined by inner walls of a housing structure,- a cover structure- a number of attachment devices (the same attachment device as explained previously ), -a portion of the cover structure is inserted in the insert opening in the attachment device,- the cover structure is secured in an installed position in the man hole opening by the resilient member in frictional engagement with the inner wall. The number of attachment devices may vary, but may in one application include three attachment devices. As mentioned previously, the cover structure may be provided as an insulation element. In accordance with an embodiment of the man hole assembly the housing structure may comprise a basin assembly or a metal lining accommodated in the man hole opening of a basin assembly. Further the inner wall may comprise a metal lining accommodated in a man hole opening of a basin assembly. In another embodiment the inner wall may comprise a concrete wall defining a man hole opening in a basin assembly. The invention may also concern a method for installing a cover structure in a man hole opening defined by inner walls of a housing structure, the method comprises the following steps;-connecting a number of attachment devices (the same attachment device as explained previously ) to a cover structure having an upper surface, a lower face and an peripheral surface by inserting the peripheral surface of the cover structure (a circumferential portion of the cover structure) into the insert opening of the attachment device(s),-lowering the cover structure through the man hole opening past an area of the manhole opening designated for installation of the cover structure, the cover structure having an orientation where an axial axis of the cover structure is positioned essentially perpendicular relative to an axial axis of the man hole opening, (the cover structure is then transported edgewise through the man hole opening to enable installation from below the man hole opening)-at a position past the installation site orienting the cover structure so the axial axis of the cover structure essentially coincides or is arranged essentially in parallel with the axial axis of the man hole opening,-pulling the cover structure with the attachment devices upwards to the installation area and engaging the resilient members with the inner wall, thereby assuming a stressed state of the resilient member where a frictional force of the resilient member works against the inner wall of the manhole opening securing the cover structure in an installed position in the man hole opening. When the cover structure is a disk shaped cover structure, the method for installing the cover structure in a man hole opening follows corresponding steps;-connecting a number of attachment devices (the same attachment device as explained previously) to a cover structure by inserting a circumferential portion of the cover structure into the insert opening of the attachment device(s), -lowering the cover structure through the man hole opening past an area of the manhole designated for installation of the cover structure in an orientation where a circular surface of the cover structure is positioned essentially perpendicular in the man hole opening,-at a position past the installation site orienting the cover structure so the circular surface is arranged in parallel with the man hole opening,-pulling the cover structure with the attachment devices upwards to the installation area, thereby engaging the resilient members with the inner wall and assuming a stressed state of the resilient member where a frictional force of the resilient member works against the inner wall of the manhole opening securing the cover structure in an installed position in the man hole opening. The method for installing the cover structure may be used both when the man hole opening has a cylindrical configuration and when the shape is a conical, and may also be suitable for other configurations. The method mentions an example where the cover structure has a disk shape, but the method may also be applicable for cover structures with shapes other than that such as a quadratic plate shape. The pulling of the cover structure with the attachment devices upwards to the installation area may determine the resilient force of the resilient member working on the inner wall and hence the frictional force and how tight the cover structure is installed in the man hole opening. When pulling the cover structure with the attachment devices closer to the top of the man hole opening, especially if the man hole opening has a conical shape, the resilient force and thereby the frictional force working on the inner wall is larger, than when installing the cover structure with the attachment device at a lower location in the man hole opening. These and other characteristics of the invention will be clear from the following description of an exemplary embodiment, given as a non-restrictive example, with reference to the attached drawings.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGSFig. 1a-c is a schematic illustration of three different basin assemblies.Fig. 2 shows part of the interior of a man hole arranged with supports for an insulation cover structure in accordance with prior art. Fig. 3a and 3b illustrate an embodiment of an attachment device in accordance with the invention.Fig. 4 shows a cover structure inserted into the attachment device.Fig 5 and 6 shows the cover structure with the attachment devices installed in the basin assembly.Fig 7 is an axial cross section through the basin assembly as shown in fig 5 and 6. Fig. 8 illustrates the installing procedure for the cover structure with the attachment devices.Fig 1a shows a basin assembly 1 built up by cylindrical elements 2 placed at a lower position and a conical element at a top portion of the basin assembly 1. The conical element 3 has a man hole opening 4 with a man hole top cover 5 to close off the interior of the basin assembly 1. The man hole man hole top cover 5 is accessible from above ground for opening and closing access to the interior of the basin assembly 1 . As illustrated all the three basin assemblies 1, 7, 8 are buried in the ground and different sets of insulation are provided on the basin assemblies 1, 7, 8 . The ground level is illustrated by reference number 6The basin assembly 1 in fig 1a is arranged with insulating elements 9 covering the exterior of the lower part of the basin assembly 1, as well as an internal plate structure 10 covering the additional man hole opening 12 to close off this part of the basin assembly 1, ensuring that the warmth from the ground is maintained within the basin and preventing the cold from entering the equipment accommodated in this part of the basin assembly 1.Fig. 1b shows a basin assembly 7 comprising cylindrical elements 2 that are covered with insulating elements 9. A man hole opening 4 with a man hole top cover 5 is provided in the basin assembly 7 and an insulating cover structure 13 is installed below the man hole top cover 5 for preventing the warmth from leaving the interior of the basin assembly 7.A similar insulating cover structure 13 is arranged below the man hole top cover 5 of the basin assembly 8, while the exterior insulation of the basin assembly 8 is provided as a circular mat not covering the basin assembly 8 but being arranged levelled at a position level below the ground level 6.Fig 2 shows a cylindrical shaped basin assembly 14 provided with insulating elements 9 for exterior insulation. A metallic liner element 15 is accommodated in a man hole opening 4 of the basin assembly 14. The liner element 15 has an inner flange 16 provided for receiving the man hole top cover 5. The insulating cover structure 13 is to be installed below the man hole top cover 5 on bearing brackets 17 projecting from the liner element 15. If an inner liner is not accommodated in the man hole opening 4, for instance in the case where a man hole top cover 5 is of concrete , the bearing brackets is arranged projecting from the inner concrete walls of the man hole opening. The bearing brackets 17 are provided as permanent installation and as discussed above a disadvantage of this arrangement is that the bearing brackets obstruct the passage through the man hole opening, especially when the man hole is relatively small, and as a consequence personnel may feel reluctant about entering, and in some cases may even refrain from doing so.An embodiment of an attachment device 17 in accordance with the invention is shown in fig 3. This attachment device 17 may facilitate the entering through the man hole opening 4 when used for installing a cover structure such as an insulating cover structure in the man hole opening 4.The attachment device 17 as shown in figs 3a and 3b has a receiving structure 18 constructed by a pair of essentially parallel arms 19, 20 and an intermediate leg 21 arranged between the parallel arms 19, 20. In a planar view as shown in fig 3, the receiving structure 18 has the shape of an open ended box shape with a missing side surface. The receiving structure 18 may also assume a U or a C form, or any other configuration suitable for insert of a cover structure. The internal surfaces 22, 23, 24 of the parallel arms 19, 20 and the intermediate leg 21 define an insert opening 29 configured for receiving at least a portion of the cover structure such as an insulating element. The arms 19, 20 are shown in fig 3 having the same axial extension with the same length, but may of course also be arranged with arms of different lengths if needed. In accordance with the shown embodiment,t the distance D between parallel arms 19, 20 is determined to fit with the thickness of the cover structure to be positioned in the insert opening. In other words the distance D equals the internal surface 24 of the intermediate leg 21. The internal surfaces 22, 23 of the arms 19, 20 are shown arranged with gripping means 25 for enhancing the frictional engagement between the attachment device 17 and the cover structure such as lugs shown in fig 3. As the skilled person will realize other provisions than lugs may be used for improving the grip between the cover structure and the arms 19, 20. Such provisions means may for instance comprise providing the internal surfaces rugged or knobbed or arranging a sand paper to the internal surfaces. Or the initial size of the distance D1 may be adjusted to enhance the resilience of the attachment device in order to obtain sufficiently frictional engagement with the inner wall. The attachment device may of course also be used without means for improving the frictional engagement. The need for means for improving the frictional engagement will depend on the surface of the cover structure to be inserted into the receiving recess/area. For instance if the cover structure is made of polystyrene or Styrofoam or a material where the surface has low frictional resistance, it may be necessary to provide the arms with means for improving the frictional engagement between the arms and the cover structure. Further the terminal end 36, 37 of both arms have a chamfered configuration in fig 3 provided as inclined surfaces 34, 35 defining a funnel shaped opening into the insert opening 28.As seen from fig. 3a and 3b, the attachment device 17 also has a securing structure 30. A distance member 31 is projecting as an extension in the axial direction of either of the parallel arms. In the fig. 3a and 3b the distance member 31 is shown projecting from the arm 19. A resilient member 32 is arranged at the end of the distance member 31 and is shown with a terminal end 33 that is slightly chamfered. The resilient member 32 is shown in an unstressed state in fig 3. The resilient member 32 then extends from the distance member 31 in an angular position in an unstressed state where a distance D1 between the resilient member and the intermediate leg is larger at the terminal end 33 of the resilient member than a distance D2 between the resilient member 32 and the intermediate leg 21 proximate to the distance member 31.Fig. 4 shows the attachment device mounted to a cover structure 40. The cover structure 40 is made of an insulating material. A circumferential portion of the cover structure 40 is inserted into the insert opening 28 with the pair of arms 19, 20 arranged in contact with the circular surfaces 41, 42 of the cover structure 40 respectively. The resilient member is here shown in the unstressed state.Fig 5 and fig 6 show the cover structure 40 here as an insulating element arranged with the three attachment devices 17, in the figures illustrated by the arm 19 in engagement with the circular surface 41 . The cover structure 40 is installed and maintained in an installation position in a manhole defined by inner walls 43 of an inner liner 42. As illustrated the inner liner 42 is arranged with an inner circumferential flange 53 for receiving a manhole top cover(not shown in the figure, but illustrated in fig 2.) The cover structure 40 is installed in the man hole opening by means of frictional engagement between the resilient member 32 and the inner wall 43 of the inner liner 42. As seen in the figures the inner liner 42 is arranged in a basin arrangement 44 having a conical configuration. As explained above, the attachment devices may also be employed for installing the cover structure in a man hole opening without an inner liner, in which case the resilient member 32 works against the inner concrete wall of the manhole. As seen from fig 5 and 6, a gap 45 appears between the arrangement of the cover structure 40 with the attachment devices 19 and the inner wall 43 of the inner liner 42 (the same is also true when no liner is present, but then between the concrete wall and the cover structure 40 arranged with the attachment devices). This gap will need filling to avoid leakage of warmth from the interior of the basin. Fig 7 illustrates the resilient member 32 brought into a stressed state and positioned against the inner wall 43 of a man hole opening 50 of the inner liner 42 which has can inner conical configuration. The resilient force working against the inner wall 43 ensures the attachment and securing of the cover structure 40 in a closed position in the man hole opening. As seen from fig 7 the distance D2 between the terminal end 33 of the resilient member 32 and the intermediate leg 21 is smaller than the same distance D2 in the unstressed state, see fig 3. When installed in a man hole opening without the inner liner 42, the resilient member will also assume the stressed state as illustrated in fig 7, and the cover structure with the attachment devices may even be installed in a man hole opening where the inner walls are inclining for instance in the case where the man hole opening has a conical configuration. The distance D2 between the resilient member 32 and the intermediate leg 21 may vary in the stressed state dependent on the shape and the dimension of the man hole opening and dependent on how tight the cover structure is to be installed in the man hole opening.Fig 8 illustrates a procedure for installation of the cover structure 40 with attachment devices in the man hole opening 50 of the inner liner 42 as shown in fig 7. The cover structure 40 with attachment devices 17 mounted to the cover structure 40 is lowered as illustrated by arrow N through the man hole opening 50 in a position where an axial axis of the cover structure is positioned essentially perpendicular relative to an axial axis of the man hole opening. The circular surfaces are oriented essentially perpendicular relative to the man hole opening 50 of the inner liner 42. The lowering may be carried out by a rope connected to the cover structure 40 or by any other suitable means. The cover structure 40 is lowered through the man hole opening 50 in this manner enabling the cover structure with the attachment devices mounted to allow the unobstructive passage through the man hole opening 50.The cover structure 40 is lowered further down the man hole opening until reaching an area of the interior of the basin arrangement with enough space to allow the cover structure 40 to turn into a horizontal position where the circular surface of the cover structure 40 is essentially in parallel with the horizontal cross section man hole opening. In this position the axial axis of the cover structure essentially coincides or is arranged essentially in parallel with the axial axis of the man hole opening. Arrow T illustrates the turning of cover structure 40 as illustrated in fig 8.The cover structure 40 is then ready for installment into the man hole opening. The cover structure 40 is lifted upwards as illustrated by arrow I and is positioned first for fitting into the lower part of the man hole opening 50 and the into the man hole opening 50 of the inner lining 42. The cover structure 40 is pulled upwards until installation position as shown in fig 7 is obtained and the resilient force of the resilient member 32 works against the inner wall of man hole to secure the cover structure 40 with the attachment devices 17 against the inner wall 43 with frictional engagement. The tightness of the cover structure 40 and the attachment devices 17 engagement with the inner wall depends on the installation position in the man hole opening. As the diameter d1 at the top of the man hole opening is smaller than the diameter d2 at the bottom due to the conical shape of the man hole opening, installing the cover structure 40 and the attachment devices 17 at a lower position in the inner liner 42, causes the distance between the resilient member 32 and the intermediate leg 21 to be larger, than when the cover structure 40 and the attachment devices 17 is pulled closer to the top. In the latter case the resilient member 32 exerts a larger resilient force against the inner wall and the cover structure obtains tighter engagement with the inner wall 43. This is especially true in the case where the man hole opening has a conical configuration and installing the cover structure with the attachment devices 17 closer to the top where the diameter of the man hole opening is smaller, brings on a tightening effect on the resilient member 32.But also when employing a man hole opening with no inner liner, this may be true, depending on the installation position in the man hole opening. In the above detailed description, various aspects of the method and system have been described with reference to the illustrated exemplary embodiment. Various modifications and variations of the exemplary embodiment, as well as other embodiments of the method and system, are considered to lie within the scope of the present invention as defined in the claims.
