Description, claims and drawings

Disclaimer: This text has been machine-scanned and may contain errors – please refer to "Publications" for legally binding content. Description
The present invention relates to a lice treatment system and method for marine organisms, such as fish, for the removal of lice.Sea lice are today one of the biggest challenges in salmon farming. Besides being a threat to fish welfare, treatment and control of sea lice are responsible for 23% of total production costs. This corresponds to more than NOK 5 billion annually where most is spent on treatment of salmon and cleaner fish (e.g. lumpfish and wrasse). Current state-of-the-art (SoA) delousing methods include medicinal and mechanical treatment. Medical treatments have several disadvantages both to the environment and to the fish themselves, as well as there is a problem with increased resistance in the sea lice to the existing medical treatments. The industry has therefore increasingly focused on non-medical methods. Examples of such non-medical treatments are Hydrolicer and thermic methods. Hydrolicer is a technology that uses low-pressure water jets to create turbulence in the treatment chamber that dislodge sea lice from the fish. The thermic methods treats fish with water that holds 33-34ºC.An example of a thermic treatment of lice is described in NO 332298 which regards a system in which the fish is processed while moving from one unit to another. The fish is constantly pumped through the system and not pooled. The heated treatment water is a closed loop into which the fish is fed, passed through and discharged continuously.NO304171 shows a system for removing parasites from fish where the fish is led through a water current where it is exposed to a water spray-jet sprayed from nozzle heads or nozzle slits. The fish is transported with the head first in a cleaning pipe which means that the water has to be flushed towards the fish under high pressure in order to remove the parasite as the parasite is more tolerant / resilient to forces acting on it from front of the parasite than forces acting from behind. It is indicated in the publication that the pressure could be approximately 140 bar, which would cause injuries to the fish during treatment, as for example scales loss, or wounds or gill damages/bleeding.Both these methods, however, have major drawbacks. A study from The Institute of Marine Research in Norway (2019) found that exposure to temperatures above 28 degrees induces pain and stress in salmon. Moreover, the Hydrolicer is criticised for inflicting pain and scratches in salmon. Moreover, most mechanical treatments today do not have effective or any methods at all to remove cleaner fish before delousing treatments. This means that an average of 40% of the cleaner fish in the fish cages die. In 2018 this accounted for more than 24 million cleaner fish. US 2018/255749 describes a system for removing parasite from fish and includes a conduit through which individual fish pass, a plurality of arms associated with eh conduit circumferentially spaced with respect to each other and a spray nozzle for each arm connected to a fluid source for dislodging parasites from said fish. The object of the invention is to overcome at least some of the problems above by providing a new system for delousing that can reduce the necessary number of treatment cycles and for salmon, reduce stress and lower the cleaner fish mortality. The object of the invention is achieved by means of the system in the patent claims. In one embodiment a system for delousing fish, arranged to receive lice-infected fish from a fish storage, such as a fish cage, fish carrier vessel, etc., and comprises at least one thermal delousing module, at least one mechanical delousing module and a pump device arranged for transporting fish from the fish storage to the thermal delousing module. In the following description, salmon will be used as an example of fish to be deloused, as salmon farming today is the most common farming industry. It should, however, be clear that the system may be used for treating any kind of fish or other organism living in water, which suffers from louse or other parasites. The system is based on a combination of treatments, a thermal treatment and a mechanical treatment, that will result in more steps that weaken the sea lice. This allows the use of gentler treatment settings for the salmon, e.g. lower temperatures and lower pressures. The thermal delousing module comprises in one embodiment a first inlet, a first outlet and a first fish flow path there between, and a water source and water temperature controller, arranged to provide water with a controlled temperature to the first fish flow path. The mechanical delousing module comprises in one embodiment a second inlet, a second outlet and a second fish flow path there between and at least one water injector arranged to inject water into the second fish flow path to detach lice from fish in the second fish flow path.Furthermore, the system can comprise a fish grade system to separate cleaner fish from salmon prior to treatment. The fish grade system may comprise a grating with spaces between the gratings adapted to the size of the fish to be separated. The grade system should be adapted to capacity of the delousing systems to prevent the grade system from being a system bottleneck. In one embodiment, there is provided a branching pipe element between the thermal delousing module and the mechanical delousing module having one inlet pipe and at least two outlet pipes. The branching pipe element is connected with the inlet pipe to the thermal delousing module and the outlet pipes are connected to the mechanical delousing modules. In this way, the number of mechanical delousing modules of the system is higher than the number of thermal delousing modules. The branching ensures that a lower number of fish will pass through each mechanical delousing module, thus increasing the efficacy of the mechanical delousing module as each fish will experience the water from the water injector, which will loosen and detach the lice from the skin of the fish.In one embodiment, the thermal delousing module comprises an injection module connected to the water source and configured to supply water into the first flow path. The water in the system may then be a combination of water following the fish from the fish storage, optionally through the fish grade system, and water supplied from the water source. In some operating condition, all the water comes from the fish storage, but during other conditions, there may be need for further water supply to ensure the desired flow rate.In one embodiment the water temperature controller is controls the temperature of the water source or the water supplied from the water source. The latter may be done also if all the water is supplied from the fish storage. In order to control the water temperature, the thermal delousing module may comprise a water heater, a water cooler or both. The water temperature cont roller may be connected to the water heater and/or water cooler, to directly control the temperature to be supplied to the system. In another embodiment, the water temperature controller measures temperature of the water in the system and in the water source, and controls the supply of water into the system to control the temperature. The system may comprise one or a number of temperature sensors, arranged in the water source, fish storage, in the first and/or second fish flow path or any combination of these. There may also be arranged temperature sensors other places in the system. The system may comprise a fish counter arranged prior to the inlet of the thermal delousing module. The fish counter may be any kind of counter device which can count the number of fish entering the system.A common problem in similar systems is that air enters the pipes. This can result in errors in the counting chamber and thus the fish count, nitrogen saturation in the water and it may affect the pumps that pumps water to the system. To mitigate this risk, the system may comprise vacuum pumps in suction chambers throughout the pipe system that can remove air. The system may also comprise at least one flow measuring unit for monitoring the flow of water in the thermal and/or mechanical delousing module. In one embodiment, the first inlet is arranged at a lower level than the second outlet. This configuration is more space-efficient and thus facilitates installation aboard a ship. Further, the small height difference, also makes the ship more stable when installed and enhances the ships characteristics at sea.The invention will now be described in more detail by means of examples and with reference to the accompanying figures.Figure 1 shows an overview of the system installed on a ship for delousing fish at the location of fish cages.Figure 2 is a closer view of the system of figure 1.Figure 3 illustrates an example embodiment of a thermal delousing module for use in the system according to the invention.Figure 4 illustrates an example embodiment of a mechanical delousing module for use in the system according to the invention.Figure 5 illustrates an example of a connection between a thermal delousing module and two mechanical delousing modules.Figure 6 shows a branching pipe element.Figure 1 and 2 shows a system 10 for delousing fish arranged on board a ship 11. The system in this example is arranged to receive lice-infected fish from a fish cage 12. However, the system may also be arranged on a fish carrier, where the delousing system will receive fish from the vessel’s internal storage. The system comprises at least one thermal delousing module 14, at least one mechanical delousing module 15 and a pump device 24 arranged for transporting fish from the fish cage to the thermal delousing module. The pump 24 in this example also causes the flow that transports the fish through the delousing module, but in some systems, these may be separate pumpsThe fish is transported from the fish cage 12 to the system 10 by means of supply pipes 13. One end of the pipes 13 are immersed in the fish cage, while the other end is connected to a thermal delousing module 14.The system in figure 1 and 2 uses three pipes, while other systems uses more pipes. To reduce number of pipes to load fish, the diameter of the pipes must be larger, and the pump dimensions must be adapted accordingly. The thermal delousing module 14 comprises a first inlet 17, a first outlet 18 and a first fish flow path 19 there between. The fish flow path is designed as a pipe system comprising a closed loop. The thermal delousing module 14 also comprises a water source and water temperature controller, arranged to provide water with a controlled temperature to the first fish flow path at first injection point 25.Figure 1 and 2 illustrates an embodiment with six thermal delousing modules 14 and twelve mechanical delousing modules 15. The mechanical delousing modules 15 will be described in more detail below. Figure 3 provides a closer look on one thermal delousing module, which is connected to one mechanical delousing module. The embodiment in figures 1-3 comprises suction chambers 23 connected to the loop, to remove air in the pipes. This can include a vacuum pump arranged to remove air without affecting the flowrate or fish passing through. In the figures, the suction chamber 23 is arranged prior to the pumps in flow direction, to ensure optimal operation of the pumps. To monitor the fish flow in the loop, there may be arranged a fish counter 27 to count the fish and measure average fish flow speed to calculate the time fish spent in the loop. The fish counter 27 is in this and other embodiments located after the pump and after the suction chamber 23. Arranging the fish counter 27 after the suction chamber 23, ensures that air bubbles in the flow do not cause false countings.A grade unit 16 is arranged between the supply pipe 13 and the thermal delousing modules 14. The grade unit is designed to to separate small salmon and cleaner fish before the delousing treatment starts. The grade unit comprises a grid, for example comprising pipes or tubes arranged in parallel with gaps between parallel pipes/tubes, and the dimensions and shape of the gaps are designed to ensure that only small salmon and cleaner fish fall through. The gaps between the pipes or tubes are for example in the range 10-60 mm, but may be larger or smaller according to the type of fish to be separated. The gaps may be adjustable in order to be easily adapted to the fish to be deloused at the specific location. As the system is very flexible and may be arranged on a ship, it can quickly travel between locations with different types of fish, or with fish at different lifetime stages. Thus, when the system is to be used for young, small fish, the gaps in the grid will be smaller than when the system is to be used for older, larger fish. The inlet 17 of thermal delousing module comprises in this example an injection module 30 with three pipes, as shown in figure 3. The injection module comprises an inlet pipe 31 from the grading, a water supply pipe 32 and a flow pipe 33 connected to a pump/suction that moves the fish forward in the system. The water supply pipe can supply a controlled amount of water from the water source of a controlled temperature. The temperature is controlled by the water temperature controller. The temperature can be colder or warmer than the temperature of the water where the fish have been stored, and the amount of water can be controlled to provide an optimal flow rate and/or temperature. Sometimes the amount of water following the fish from the source and/or the grade unit is sufficient to ensure the correct flow rate, but sometimes it is necessary to add more water. Similarly, the temperature in the flow path 19 can be controlled by injecting water of a controlled temperature through the water supply pipe 32.The system is designed to ensure that fish can go through the system without clogging, stops or fish swimming against the current, extending the time they spend in the system and thereby unwanted stress on the fish. A critical step is when fish first meet the warm or cold water, i.e. when they enter thermal delousing module after the grading.A challenge is that too sharp angles of the pipes towards each other can result in fish collisions with the walls and sustain damages. The system may therefore be designed with a flow path comprising sections of straight pipes connected with curved pipe sections with relatively large radii. This minimizes the risk of clogging and damages caused by sharp angles. If the suction in the pipes is too high, this can stress fish or crowd them in the pipe. When the water pressure is not high enough fish can swim against the current causing stops. This is further complicated by the system’s ability both to run with cold and warm water. This is because cold water (-1 to 1 degree) can numb the fish making them calm and less likely to swim against the current. On the other hand, warm water (28 to 32 degrees) can induce stress in fish making them more active and more likely to swim against the current. Consequently, the optimal conditions can vary depending on whether the system and thus the thermal and/or mechanical delousing modules runs with cold or warm water.Figure 4 is a closer view of the mechanical delousing module 15. The mechanical delousing module 15 comprises a second inlet 20, a second outlet 21 and a second fish flow path 22 there between, at least one water injector 41 arranged to inject water into the second fish flow path 22 to detach lice from fish in the second fish flow path. A pumping arrangement 42 is provided to provide the desired flow of water, and thus flow of fish through the mechanical delousing module. An example of a first flow path of the thermal delousing module and a second flow path of the mechanical delousing module is shown in figure 3.As mentioned earlier, the number of thermal delousing modules is not necessary the same as the number of mechanical delousing modules. In figures 1 and 2, there are two mechanical delousing modules for each thermal delousing module. This is further illustrated in figure 5. The thermal delousing module 14 is connected to two mechanical delousing modules 15 through a branching pipe element 50 having one inlet pipe 51 and two outlet pipes 52. The branching pipe element 50 is arranged between the thermal delousing module 14 and the mechanical delousing module 15 and is connected with the inlet pipe 51 to the thermal delousing module and the outlet pipes 52 are connected to the mechanical delousing module. Figure 6 shows the branching pipe element 50 more clearly.
