Description, claims and drawings

Disclaimer: This text has been machine-scanned and may contain errors – please refer to "Publications" for legally binding content. Description
A long line fishing hook assemblyTechnical fieldThe present disclosure relates to a long line fishing hook assembly, a long line fishing hook assembly and a float for long line fishing gear. More specifically, the disclosure relates to a long line fishing hook assembly, a long line fishing hook assembly and a float for long line fishing gear as defined in the introductory parts of claim 1, claim 9 and claim 10.Background artLong line fishing implies a fishing technique in which a main line with several baited hooks is layed out. The main line have a length of 180 to 540 meters and the hooks are attached at intervals (1 to 1.2 m) by means of branch lines called snoods which are attached to the main line by a swivel.Baiting, coiling and handling longline gear is a mechanized in a prosess called autolining. A company that produces such system is Mustad. The Mustad Autoline system, all the hooks and lines are stored on magazines. The size and quantity of these magazines vary depending on the vessel’s size and needs. After the buoy line and anchor have been deployed, the swivelline and hooks are pulled through the automatic baiting machine at a rate dependent on the vessel’s speed. The most advanced baiting machine can deploy 6 hooks per second at a baiting percentage averaging 95 – 97%. After soaking time the hauling process begins. The hooks and line are pulled over a sideroller where a crewmember helps the fish come on board, checking gear and controlling the hauling speed. Subsequently the hooks and line continue through the hook cleaner and linehauler before being passed in the HookSeparator to be loaded onto the magazines. The crew will then make sure that the line and hooks are properly hung and stored. At this time snoods, hooks and swivels are replaced as needed.Longline fishing methods mainly catch albacore tuna, yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, green-dried tuna, bonito, sailfish, marlin, etc. that live in the deeper waters, and the weight is usually more than 20 kg. The number of fish caught at any given time with long line fishing technique is a very important concern for those in the field. Some techniques to increase catch per hour include fishing lights. For examaple, in a tuna long-line fishery, it is known that tuna is attracted by light emitted by squid. US2021045365 A1 discloses a fishing light for a long-line fishery that includes a housing where a pair of batteries are received and a cap that is coupled to the housing in a waterproof state, a substrate, which is provided with an LED and a light guiding member thatguides light from the LED by partially transmitting and partially reflecting in a light guide is provided between the cap and the housing to realize a luminous body that extends in an axis direction through refractive diffusion of the light of the LED through the light guiding member, and the light guiding member may be provided as a single or as a pair. The light guiding member may be disposed to face the inside of the cap or the inside of the housing, and the housing may further include a polygonal portion at an outer side thereof to further diffuse light emitted from the light guiding member disposed there inside to the width direction.GB 2298771 A discloses a fishing tackle comprising a long line, an attachment member comprising a sleeve rotatably mounted on the line, stop means axially fixed relative to the line to limit movement of the attachment member along the line, and an intermediate member which is connected to the attachment member by a C-shaped connection member. With the conventional ways of deploying long-lines with baited hooks, the hooks with bait tend to sink down towards or into the seabed, where an ecosystem of seaweed, crabs, various other bottom feeders etc dwell. The bait is attractive for these creatures and experience has shown that a very large portion of the bait is consumed there by these seabed creatures or otherwise disappears before the fish that actually should be attracted to the bait ever finds it. Therefore, the yield is traditionally low, on the order of 0,2-0,6 kg/hook.Additionally, the hooks tend to get stuck in the seaweed etc.SummaryIt is an object of the present disclosure to mitigate, alleviate or eliminate one or more of the above-identified deficiencies and disadvantages in the prior art and solve at least the above mentioned problem. According to a first aspect there is provided a long line fishing hook assembly, comprising: a snood with a first end attached to a hook and a second end attached to a main line with an attachment means, a stop means attached at a position that is a distance away from the first end 2a of the snood; a float freely mounted on the snood, the float configured to freely move between the first end and the stop means, wherein when the fish hook assembly is deployed in water the float moves adjacent to the stop means, such that the hook with a bait floats above the main line and seafloor 7. According to some embodiments, the float moves away from the stop means and towards the second end of the snood when the fishing hook assembly is stored onboard the fishing boat.According to some embodiments, the float is configured to pass through hook cleaners, linehaulers and hook separators onboard fishing boat.According to some embodiments, the float is made of buoyant material.According to some embodiments, the float the assembly comprises a cylindrical body. According to some embodiments, the cylindrical body has a diameter between 15-40 mm and a length between 35-100 mm.According to some embodiments, the attachment means is a sleeve that is rotatably mounted on the mainline.According to some embodiments, the stop means is attached 5-10 cm away from the hook.According to a second aspect there is provided a long line fishing hook assembly, comprising a snood with a first end attached to a hook and a second end attached to a main line with an attachment means, a float mounted on the snood, the float configured to freely move between the first end and the second end of the snood.According to a third aspect there is provided a float for long line fishing gear, the float comprising: a body that is a cylindrical shape, a first and second openings for receiving a snood ; wherein the float is made of XXX material and has a diameter between 15-40 mm and a length between 35-100 mm.Effects and features of the second and third aspects are to a large extent analogous to those described above in connection with the first aspect. Embodiments mentioned in relation to the first aspect are largely compatible with the second and third aspects. The present disclosure will become apparent from the detailed description given below. The detailed description and specific examples disclose preferred embodiments of the disclosure by way of illustration only. The disclosure may, however, be embodied in other forms and should not be construed as limited to the herein disclosed embodiments. The disclosed embodiments are provided to fully convey the scope of the disclosure to the skilled person.Figure 1 shows a long-line fishing boat with a long-line fishing gear 1 laid on seafloor 7. The fishing gear comprising a main line 4 in which plurality of fishing hook assemblies 8 are attached thereon, buoys 9 attached to the main line 4 at intervals so that the long line fishing gear 1 can easily be retrieved by the fishing boat 10 and that the fishing gear 1 can be located in a predetermined distance from the sea surface 11, anchors 13 for anchoring the fishing gear 1 on the seafloor 7.Figure 2 shows the fishing hook assembly 8, the fishing hook assembly 8 comprises a snood 2 with a first end 2a attached to a hook 3 and a second end 2b attached to the main line 4 with an attachment means 5, a float 6 mounted on the snood 2, stop means 16 attached at a position 2c that is a distance (d) away from the first end 2a of the snood. The float is configured to freely move in between the first end 2a and the position 2c of the snood 2. When the fishing hook assembly 4 is submerged in water, the float 6 moves towards the stop means 16, thereby permitting the hook 3 to float up above the seafloor 7 and the main line 4. This has several advantages. Firstly, it prevents the fishing hook assemblies to tangle with each other and to tangle with the main line 4. Secondly, it permits the hook 3 to remain suspended above the seafloor and thereby eliminating seafloor creatures and habitats to intervene with the hook 3 eating bait 14 intended to lure the fish onto the hook 3. The suspended hook with the bait 14 is now out of reach from the seabed creatures and more available for the target fish 15. The hook 3 is attached at the first end 2a of the snood 2 and is separated from the stop means 16 by the distance d. In one embodiment, the distance d may be 5-10 cm. The aim of allowing a separation between the float 6 and the hook 3 is to permit the hook 3 to remain suspended in a desired angle such that the bait on the hook 2 is easily accessible for the target fish 15. As can be seen in figure 5, the portion 17 of the snood 2 that is between ends 2c and 2a curves downward relative to the float 6. The desired angle of the hook 3 in relation to the float 6 may be set by adjusting the distance d between the hook 3 and the stop means 16. The fishing hook assembly may further comprise a fishing light like an LED for attracting target fish to the hook 3.Suspending the hook 3 with the bait 14 out of the reach from the seabed creatures and making it more accessible for the target fish 15 has shown economic benefits for those in the field and has increased the target fish catch yield with 10-30%. The yield is traditionally on the order of 0,2-0,6 kg/hook. With the hook assembly 8 according to the invention, the yield has increased by order of 0,02-0,06 kg/hook.Figure 3 shows the float according to the invention. The float 6 comprises a body 11 having an opening 12 adapted to receive the snood 2. The body may be a cylindrical shape. The float is made of buoyant material. It may have a dimension between 15x35 mm– 40x100 mm. The float 6 may be dimensioned for autoline systems, like Mustad autoline. During hauling, the float 6 and the stop means 16 are not required to be removed from the fish snood 2. Their dimensions make it possible to pass through hook cleaners, line haulers and hook separators and can be loaded onto to fish snood magazines together with the hook 3 for storage. The ability of the float 6 to freely move between the first end 2a and the stop means 16, permits the float 6 to fall down along the snood 2 when the hooks 3 are stacked on the hooking machine. The floats 6 where immobile on the snood 2, it would be impossible to use a traditional hooking machine, as the float 6 would interfere with each other and take up to much space. The first aspect of this disclosure shows a long line fishing hook assembly, comprising: a snood the th aspect with a first end 2a attached to a hook 3 and a second end 2b attached to a main line 4 with an attachment means 5, a stop means 16 attached at a position 2c that is a distance d away from the first end 2a of the snood; a float 6 freely mounted on the snood 2, the float 6 configured to freely move between the first end 2a and the stop means 16, wherein when the fish hook assembly is deployed in water the float 6 moves adjacent to the stop means 16, such that the hook 3 with a bait 14 floats above the main line 4 and seafloor 7.The float 6 moves away from the stop means 16 and towards the second end 2b of the snood 2 when the fishing hook assembly is stored onboard the fishing boat. The float 6 is configured to pass through hook cleaners, linehaulers and hook separators onboard fishing boat. The float 6 is made of buoyant material. The float 6 the assembly comprises a cylindrical body. The cylindrical body has a diameter between 15-40 mm and a length between 35-100 mm.The attachment means 5 is a sleeve that is rotatably mounted on the mainline 4.The stop means is attached 5-10 cm away from the hook 3.The second aspect of this disclosure shows a long line fishing hook assembly, comprising a snood 2 with a first end 2a attached to a hook 3 and a second end 2b attached to a main line 4 with an attachment means 5, a float 6 mounted on the snood 2, the float configured to freely move between the first end 2a and the second end 2b of the snood 2.The third aspect of this disclosure shows a float for long line fishing gear, the float comprising: a body the th aspect that is a cylindrical shape, a first and second openings for receiving a snood 2; wherein the float is made of buoyant material and has a diameter between 15-40 mm and a length between 35-100 mm.The person skilled in the art realizes that the present disclosure is not limited to the preferred embodiments described above. The person skilled in the art further realizes that modifications and variations are possible within the scope of the appended claims.Additionally, variations to the disclosed embodiments can be understood and effected by the skilled person in practicing the claimed disclosure, from a study of the drawings, the disclosure, and the appended claims.
