Description, claims and drawings

Disclaimer: This text has been machine-scanned and may contain errors – please refer to "Publications" for legally binding content. Description
The present invention concerns a modular exercise building in accordance with the preamble of claim 1.BackgroundToday, exercises for military personnel, firemen and police are often performed at fixed locations, such as rigid exercise buildings, or empty buildings and warehouses, sometimes equipped with makeshift wall structures. While those locations per se fulfil their purpose with respect to accomplishment of an exercise goal, the trainees will memorize the room layout of the internal of the building. Then, the value of subsequent training sessions will be reduced since the trainees may remember the layout and prepare themselves before entering a room during an exercise. Moreover, exercise locations of this type represent a considerable expense to the military, police or fire service and the usage of makeshift locations and ever-changing facilities represent logistical challenges as well.US 5,364,311 describes a collapsible and reconfigurable labyrinth intended for use with amusement. The labyrinth is comprised of numerous collapsible separating boards temporarily secured by vertical pivotal posts. The labyrinth can be extended vertically in separate floors interconnected by a stairway. The separating boards can be arranged into any configuration to make up a desired labyrinth route.ObjectAccordingly, it is an object to provide an exercise building for the purpose as outlined above that enables a fast assembly or erection of a building having a countless number of room layout combinations, at a low economic cost. Another object is to provide such an exercise building that enables the organizer to rapidly change room layout between respective exercise session to prevent trainees to remember the room layout of the exercise building when attending to a new exercise session. Furthermore, another object is to make the most out of any accessible training area, since the exercise building can be customized to fit varying size and shape. The inventionThe objects above are met by a modular exercise building in accordance with the characterizing part of claim 1. Additional advantageous features of the modular exercise building appear from the dependent claim. The invention concerns a modular exercise building comprising an outer shell with doors and optionally windows, wherein the outer shell consists of right-angled corners divided by numerous wall modules connected to wall interconnecting columns mounted in a repeatable pattern defined by:one wall interconnecting column mounted at each corner of a square, wherein said square is oriented at a 45° angle with respect to the outer shell seen from above, and numerous squares in conjunction make up a repeatable pattern of cohesive squares contained by said shell. One or two wall modules are attached to a wall interconnecting column at a second end to enable the wall module to pivot around the wall interconnecting column, wherein each wall module comprises a main wall element and a pivotal wall element, wherein the pivotal wall element is attached to a hinge arranged at a first end of the wall module to enable rotation between a folded position adjacent to the main wall element, andan unfolded position at any mutual angle between the main wall element and the pivotal wall element in the range of 0° to 270°, in particulara first unfolded position where the main wall element and the pivotal wall element are arranged at a mutual angle of 90°,a second unfolded position where the main wall element and the pivotal wall element are arranged in a common plane, anda third unfolded position where the main wall element and the pivotal wall element are arranged at a mutual angle of 270°.In accordance with the invention, the dimensions of each square are related to the dimensions of the wall module by the following:the shortest distance between two wall interconnecting columns mounted in the square configuration corresponds to the total length of an unfolded wall module, wherein the main wall element and the pivotal wall element are arranged in a common plane. The length of a wall module in its collapsed configuration corresponds to the dimensions of the pattern by the following: the shortest distance between two wall interconnecting columns that are diagonally mounted in the square configuration equals the sum of the length of two wall modules and the width of one said wall module. In other words, the modular exercise building comprising a shell with right-angled corners, doors and optionally windows, wherein the shell’s outer perimeter can be adjusted to fit inside a designated area. The internal compartment of the shell is divided by numerous wall modules assembled in a specified repeatable pattern. The wall modules can both pivot and unfold. The pivotal capacity of the wall modules in combination with the pattern in which they are mounted and their ability to unfold a pivotal wall element to form corners, allows for a countless number of room layout combinations. Each wall module comprises: a main wall element and a pivotal wall element, wherein the pivotal wall element is attached to a hinge arranged at a first end of the wall module to enable rotation betweena folded position adjacent to the main wall element, and an unfolded position at any mutual angle between the main wall element and the pivotal wall element in the range of 0 to 270 degrees, in particulara first unfolded position where the main wall element and pivotal wall element are arranged at a mutual angle of 90°,a second unfolded position where the main wall element and pivotal wall element are arranged in a common plane,a third unfolded position where the main wall element and pivotal wall element are arranged at a mutual angle of 270°, orat any angle in the interval from 0° to 270°.Each wall module is connected to a wall interconnecting column arranged at a second end of the wall module, opposite the first end. The wall interconnecting column exhibits attachment means to establish a connection between the wall interconnecting column and the wall module, with the option to mount additional attachment means to connect to another wall module, thus interconnecting two wall modules. Wall modules attached to the wall interconnecting column can be pivoted around the wall interconnecting column, thus allowing the wall modules to be independently placed in desired positions. The wall interconnecting columns are mounted onto a designated floor in a repeatable square pattern, inside an outer shell comprising of right angles. The square pattern is oriented 45 degrees offset with respect to the outer shell. The shortest distance between two wall interconnecting columns corresponds to the length of an unfolded wall module where the main wall element and pivotal wall element are arranged in a common plane. The length of a folded wall module corresponds to half the distance between two diagonally adjacent wall interconnecting columns minus half the thickness of a wall module. This enables two folded wall modules that are connected to diagonally adjacent wall interconnecting columns to be placed in a common plane, with their respective second ends towards each other, only being separated by the thickness of one wall module. The square pattern in which the wall interconnecting columns are mounted, in combination with the relative dimensions of the pattern and dimensions of the wall module enables any wall module, provided the pivotal wall element is folded, to be pivoted around the wall interconnecting column without conflicting with the equivalently mounted wall module attached to any diagonally adjacent wall interconnecting column.Detailed descriptionThe invention is in the following described in further details with reference to drawings of an example embodiment of the invention, whereFig.1A is a perspective view of a wall module,Fig.1B is a drawing similar to Fig.1A, but with a door,Fig.2A is a drawing similar to Fig.1B, with a pivotal wall element rotated in a first position, Fig.2B is a drawing similar to Fig.2A, with the pivotal wall element in a second position, Fig.2C is a drawing similar to Figs.2A and 2B, with the pivotal wall element in a third position, Fig.3A is a perspective view of two wall modules connected to a wall interconnecting column, Fig.3B is a top view parallel projection of two wall modules connected to a wall interconnecting column, Fig.4A illustrate an unfolded wall module mounted to a wall interconnecting column, where the main wall element and pivotal wall element are arranged in a common plane towards another adjacent wall interconnecting column.Fig.4B is a top view parallel projection of the illustration in Fig 4A.Fig. 5A illustrate two folded wall modules mounted on adjacent wall interconnecting columns arranged with a 90-degree angle with respect to each other.Fig.5B is a top view parallel projection of the illustration in Fig.5A.Fig.6A illustrates two folded wall modules mounted on diagonally adjacent wall interconnecting columns arranged in a common plane.Fig.6B is a top view parallel projection of the illustration in Fig.6A.Fig.7A is a top view parallel projection of four wall interconnecting columns mounted in the form of a square. The pattern is indicated by dotted lines.Fig.7C is a top view parallel projection showing how the repeatable square pattern in which the wall interconnecting columns are mounted extends in an outer shell of a different perimeter. The pattern is indicated by dotted lines.Fig.7D is a perspective view of the illustration in Fig.7BFig. 7E is a perspective view of an assembled building with an outer shell, wall interconnecting columns and wall modules attached to the wall interconnecting columns.Fig.7F is a top view parallel projection of the illustration in Fig.7E.Fig.7G is a perspective view of an assembled building with an outer shell, wall interconnecting columns and wall modules attached to the wall interconnecting columns, arranged in an alternative layout configuration.Fig.7H is a top view parallel projection of the illustration in Fig.7G. Fig 7I-7K are perspective views similar to Fig.7G, but with the wall modules configured in other alternative layout configurations. Now with reference to fig.1A, the basic construction element of the modular exercise building in accordance with the invention is shown, a wall module indicated by reference number 300 in a collapsed configuration. The wall module 300 does in its simplest form comprise a main wall element 301 and a pivotal wall element 302, wherein the pivotal wall element 302 can be pivoted out from the wall module 300 at a maximum angle of 270 degrees with respect to the main wall element 301 about a pivotal wall hinge 303 arranged at one end of the wall module 300 (first end 301a). A wall interconnecting column 200 is arranged at the opposite end (second end 301b) of the wall module 300, serving as a fixed column around which the wall module 300 can pivot. Figure 1B is a drawing similar to Figure 1A, where a door 104 is provided in the main wall element 301.Figures 2A-C illustrates multiple positions of the pivotal wall element 302 with respect to the main wall element 301. In Fig.2A the pivotal wall element 302 is pivoted 90 degrees with respect to the main wall element 301. In Fig.2B the pivotal wall element 302 is pivoted 180 degrees, whereas in Fig. 2C the pivotal wall element 302 is pivoted 270 degrees with respect to the collapsed configuration of the main wall element 301 as shown in Fig.1A and 1B.Figures 3A and 3B illustrate two wall modules 300 attached to one wall interconnecting column 200, thus enabling two wall modules 300 to pivot independently around one wall interconnecting column 200.Figures 4A and 4B illustrate two adjacent wall interconnecting columns 200 and one wall module 300 configured with the pivotal wall element 302 pivoted out from the main wall element 301 at an angle of 180 degrees, arranging them in a common plane. The length of the wall module 300 in said configuration is recited as “Length B” and corresponds to the distance between two adjacent wall interconnecting columns 200 as shown. The pivotal capacity of a wall module 300 around the wall interconnecting column 200 in combination with the pivotal capacity of the pivotal wall element 302 with respect to the main wall element 301, enables any wall module 300 to make up a solid wall construction between the wall interconnecting column 200 to which it is mounted and any other adjacent wall interconnecting column 200.Figures 5A and 5B illustrate two adjacent wall interconnecting columns 200 and two wall modules 300 in a collapsed configuration as shown in Fig.1A and 1B. The wall modules 300 are arranged at an angle of 45 degrees with respect to the line between the two wall interconnecting columns 200. The pivotal capacity of a wall module 300 enables rotation around a wall interconnecting column 200, further enabling any two wall modules 300 mounted on adjacent wall interconnecting columns 200 to be positioned to form a 90 degrees corner wall structure.Figures 6A and 6B illustrate two diagonally adjacent wall interconnecting columns 200 and two wall modules 300 in a collapsed configuration as shown in Fig.1A and 1B, arranged toward each other in a common plane. The length of one wall module 300 is recited as “Length A”. The width of said wall module 300 is recited as “Width D”. The distance between the first wall module end 301a is recited as “Length C” which equals “Width D”. The distance between the two wall interconnecting columns 200 equals the sum of the length of two collapsed wall modules 300 and the width of one wall module 300 (2 x Length A Width D). This enables any two collapsed wall modules 300 as shown in Fig.1A and 1B mounted on diagonally adjacent wall interconnecting columns 200 to be pivoted to form a common plane, thus forming a wall structure between the two diagonally adjacent wall interconnecting columns 200, only separated by the width of one wall module 300.Figure 7A illustrates four wall interconnecting columns 200 mounted in relation to each other to form a square 101 seen from above.Figures 7B and 7D illustrate the repeatable pattern 100 in which the wall interconnecting columns 200 are mounted within an outer shell 10 comprising right-angled corners. A pattern 100 is comprised of several squares 101 in conjunction to make up a repeatable pattern 100 of cohesive squares 101 contained by said shell 10. The squares 101 are oriented at a 45 degrees mutual angle offset to the walls of the outer shell 10.Figures 7E and 7F is a similar drawing as Fig 7B and 7D, but with wall modules 300 mounted onto the wall interconnecting columns 200. The wall interconnecting columns 200 adjacent to the outer shell 10 are only connected to one wall module 300, while any other wall interconnecting column 200 is connected to two wall modules 300.Figure 7C is a drawing similar to Fig 7B, but with the outer shell 10 of a different parameter. The pattern 100 is extended by adding five squares 101 with respect to Fig 7B in order to occupy the interior of the outer shell 10. Evidently, any pattern 100 can be extended in any way by adding additional squares 101 in conjunction with existing squares 101.Figures G and H are drawings similar to Fig.7E and F, but with the wall modules 300 positioned in an exemplary room layout configuration. Wall modules 300 can be pivoted to desired positions to form a desired layout in accordance with the educational needs of the personnel in training. Figures 7I-7K illustrate different arrangements of a building with numerous rooms divided by wall modules 300. As is evident, the internal room arrangement within the shell 10 can be provided in a practically countless number of configurations, which prevents the personnel training inside from memorizing the room configuration from one exercise session to another.Technical effectThe modular concept of the exercise building in accordance with the present invention makes it possible to change room layout between one exercise session and another. In this way the trainees can be challenged to a totally different building layout compared to prior ones they have entered in an exercise context. Moreover, the building can be manufactured in a cost-effective manner by a few identical building structure components. An exercise building can be erected, or its layout changed, rapidly. An exercise building can be erected completely only by modules in accordance with the invention, or an exercise building can be erected inside an existing empty building serving as a shell. And last but not least, the trainees can obtain enhanced skills in a shorter period of time compared to prior art exercise locations.Reference numbers10 shell/outer shell100 pattern comprising squares 101 that govern the positioning of wall interconnecting columns 200101 square for mounting wall interconnecting columns 200200 wall interconnecting column300 wall module301a first end of main wall element 301301b second end of main wall element 301301 main wall element302 pivotal wall element303 wall hinge104 door105 window
