Description:Technical field of the inventionThe present invention relates to a fishing rod, especially fit for fly-fishing, comprising an elongated, thin and flexible body – referred to as the “blank” – removably installable within a handle assembly comprising at least one handle, and equipped with a reel for a fishing line, attached to the rod through a reel seat permanently affixed to the handle assembly. Background of the inventionThe basic fishing rod and reel have been known and used by sport anglers for a considerable period of time.A conventional sport fishing rod and reel setup consists of an elongated, thin and flexible body, often referred to as the “blank”, equipped with a gripping device comprising at least one handle, attached to the rod at the rear end of the rod, a reel with a fishing line attached to the rod at the rear end of the rod, and a fishing lure or bait attached to the end of the fishing line. Guide rings may be affixed to the blank at certain intervals along the blank, and the fishing line is threaded through the guide rings between the reel and the tip of the rod.As fishing rods tend to be long, commonly ranging from 2m to 4m, they are usually divided into shorter, more convenient sections that the angler assembles prior to fishing.Different rods, reels, fishing lines, lures and baits have been developed over the years in order to optimize the ability to catch different species of fish under different conditions. Each kind of angling method requires a specialized technique for casting and presenting the lure.Casting with a fishing rod, and a fly-fishing rod in particular, is all about managing the casting technique. Fly-fishing is an angling method that uses a light-weight lure—called an artificial fly— to catch fish. The light weight of the artificial fly requires casting techniques significantly different from other forms of casting. Unlike other casting methods, flyfishing can be thought of as a method of casting line rather than lure. Non-flyfishing methods rely on a lure's weight to pull line from the reel during the forward motion of a cast. By design, a fly is too light to be cast, and thus simply follows the unfurling of a properly cast fly line, which is heavier and tapered and therefore more castable than lines used in other types of fishing. For the angler it is of importance to "present" the fly as far out from the rod as possible. This requires a good casting technique, using a fishing rod with optimal qualities.Fly-fishing rods come in different sizes, usually denoted as the “weight” of the rod. The fly-fishing rod weight refers to the overall strength or size of the rod. Generally, the smaller the number, the lighter and weaker the rod is. Conversely, the larger the weight, the stronger and heavier the rod is.For the fly-fishing angler, the choice of rod weight depends on several factors, such as the size of the target fish, the size of the fly, the weight of the fishing line, weather conditions, the characteristics of the vegetation along the waterfront, and conditions relative to the water, such as whether it is still or running, flat or wavy.As the above-mentioned factors may change frequently, it is often necessary for the angler to bring several fly-fishing rods with different weights for a single fishing trip.Accordingly, a need will be seen for a system of interchangeable fly-fishing blanks with different weights using a common handle and reel seat.Furthermore, the rods of different weight will generally have varying total lengths, and the tapering design of the blanks means that the different blanks will have varying diameters at their butt ends. Accordingly, a need will be seen for a system that can accommodate interchangeable blanks of varying diameters, and provide a means of securing them tightly.Generally, the fly-fishing rods with lower weight are used for single-handed casting, while the larger weight rods are used for two-handed casting. For single-handed casting, the rods are equipped with a gripping device consisting of a single handle, while the two-handed rods are equipped with a gripping device consisting of two handles. Some fly-fishing rods are equipped with a detachable second handle, letting the angler choose between one-handed and two-handed casting by their own preference.Accordingly, a need will be seen for a handle assembly that can accommodate a detachable second handle for use with the higher weight blanks. In accordance with the present invention, the above-mentioned needs are accomplished by the introduction of a fitting sleeve permanently affixed to the butt end of the lower section of the blank. The fitting sleeve has a mostly cylindrical shape, and is aligned concentrically along the butt end of the blank. The handle assembly has a mostly cylindrical cavity that is aligned axially along the handle, with an aperture of said cavity in the butt end the handle assembly. The shape and size of the cavity in the handle assembly corresponds with the outer surface of the fitting sleeve, in such a way that the cavity fits closely around the fitting sleeve when the blank is entered into the handle assembly. Furthermore, the handle assembly has an axial passage through the entirety of the handle assembly, allowing the part of the blank that protrudes from the fitting sleeve to pass through the handle assembly. The fitting sleeve is permanently affixed to the butt end of the lower section of the blank using glue or other commonly known means. When several blanks are equipped with fitting sleeves, blanks of varying diameters can be interchangeably and securely installed in the universal handle assembly. While the fitting sleeves can be attached to blanks of varying outer shapes and diameters, the fitting sleeves themselves have a uniform outer surface and geometry, allowing the interchangeable installation of different blanks in a universal handle assembly. The lower section of the blank may be free from any permanently affixed guide rings, allowing the lower section of the blank with the fitting sleeve to be entered into the handle assembly from the butt end of the handle assembly. The handle assembly may be equipped with a locking device on the butt end of the handle assembly, which can be locked in place with a well-known means such as a threaded cap nut or a latch. When locked in place, the locking device secures the blank inside the handle assembly. Moreover, both ends of the fitting sleeve may include conical surfaces that interlock with matching conical surfaces within the handle assembly. The conical surfaces ensure that the fitting sleeve is placed in a tight grip, preventing any axial or radial movements of the fitting sleeve relative to the handle assembly.By entering the blank with the fitting sleeve from the butt end of the handle assembly and locking it in place with a locking device that pushes the fitting sleeve axially forward, a constant axial force is applied between the forward-facing conical surface on the forwardmost end of the fitting sleeve and the rearward-facing conical surface in the forwardmost end of the cavity in the handle assembly. The locking device includes a forward-facing conical surface that interacts with a matching, rearward-facing conical surface on the butt end on the fitting sleeve, consequently creating constant and simultaneous axial forces on the conical surfaces in both ends of the fitting sleeve, and thus placing the fitting sleeve in an immoveable grip. Furthermore, the interlocking of conical surfaces in the handle assembly and on the fitting sleeve ensure the concentrical alignment of the blank within the handle assembly when an axial force is applied between the fitting sleeve and the handle assembly. In one embodiment of the invention, the butt end of the handle assembly is equipped with exterior threads, and the locking device is shaped as a fastening cap with internal threads that can be screwed onto the exterior threads on the handle assembly. The inside of the fastening cap is equipped with a forward-facing conical surface that interacts with a matching, rearward-facing conical surface on the butt end of the fitting sleeve.Furthermore, the fastening cap can be replaced with a prolonged fastening cap that also comprises a second handle for the angler, thus allowing the angler to use the rod with a two-handled grip by their own preference.A discussion of the related art of which the present inventor is aware, and its differences and distinctions from the present invention, is provided below.U.S. Patent No.6,115,955 issued on Sep. 12, 2000 to Leroy Sledge, titled “INTERCHANGEABLE SYSTEM FOR FISHING RODS” describes a fishing rod assembly with interchangeable handle components that permits different reels, different counterweights or counterweight amounts, and even different rod blank assemblies, to be assembled and used interchangeably with one another for different types of fishing. The handle includes an axial passage for a blank to be removably installed. The passage fits tightly around the blank, and consequently does not accommodate blanks with varying diameters. Sledge makes no mention of a fitting sleeve or other means to accommodate blanks with varying diameters. In the Sledge invention, the blank is entered from the front of the handle assembly. US 2021360909 A1 describes a modular fishing rod system allowing the end user to easily and securely change one or more of the handle portion and rod blank. The system includes a rod blank, rod sleeve assembly and a slide-on handle assembly.Summary of the inventionA principal object of the present invention is to provide an improved fishing rod and handle assembly, with the handle assembly able to interchangeably accommodate different fishing rod blanks.A further object of the invention is to provide an improved fishing rod and handle assembly where the angler can change fishing rod blanks quickly and conveniently.Another object of the invention is to is to provide an improved fishing rod and handle assembly, with the handle assembly being able to accommodate fishing rod blanks of various diameters.Yet another object of the invention is to provide an improved fishing rod and handle assembly, with the handle assembly being able to secure the fishing rod blank in a tight and immoveable grip.Another additional object of the invention is to ensure the concentrical alignment of the fishing rod blank within the handle assembly.Another object of the invention is to provide an improved fishing rod and handle assembly, where the handle assembly can be equipped with a second handle for a two-handed grip, as desired by the angler.Yet another additional object of the invention is to provide an improved fishing rod and handle assembly, with the optional second handle providing means for locking the blank inside the handle assembly.
