Description, claims and drawings

Disclaimer: This text has been machine-scanned and may contain errors – please refer to "Publications" for legally binding content. Description
Field of the inventionThe present invention relates to a self-bleeding coolant device for venting of air in a coolant liquid, comprising a hollow coolant tank for accommodating the coolant liquid, and a coolant supply outlet for supply of coolant liquid and a coolant return inlet for receipt of returning coolant liquid. The invention also relates to a coolant arrangement for electrical systems. Background of the inventionA cooling system is responsible for maintaining the optimal working temperature of several components like batteries and/or motors. However, the presence of air, air pockets or tiny air bubbles in the cooling system compromises coolant circulation, leading to loss of cooling efficiency which can make the system overheat.Overheating can cause potential damage, malfunction, or affect the performance of several devices such as pump, battery, motor or other internal components of the propulsion system. The presence of air in the cooling system can also cause loss of pump prime. The presence of air pockets or tiny air bubbles can occur in many ways. For example: whilst dispensing fluid in the system, air can be trapped in the suction pipe; dissolved gas and others. There are mainly two methods to remove the air, air pocket or tiny air bubbles from the cooling system: to manually bleed the cooling system or to use an external device such as a vacuum pump (negative pressure). The problem with those methods is that they require manual intervention or special tools (vacuum pump). Apart from that, manual bleeding is a time-consuming and laborious method to remove the air from the cooling system.Usually, to remove air, air pockets or air bubbles, an external device is used such as a vacuum pump or a micro-bubble system or one can have bleed valves somewhere else in the cooling system or perform a manual bleed. On the other hand, self-bleeding systems are designed to automatically eliminate air pockets, air bubbles or any air trapped within the cooling system. Those systems can comprise channels, vents, expansion tanks and bleed valves. On those systems channels are created to dislodge any air trapped in the coolant liquid, which by means of the vents reaches the expansion tank and bleed valves. The vents and bleed valves are usually located on the highest points of the system, where air tends to accumulate.Disclosure of the state of artCN207311145U discloses an auto-discharging automobile kettle, which comprises a hollow kettle body and a lid. A cooling liquid is contained in the kettle body, and a water circulation pipeline and an exhaust mechanism are also included. The purpose is to provide a car kettle capable of automatically venting the body, which can automatically eliminate the air in the cooling liquid. Air is vented through a hollow column communicating with coolant pipes, and because the air density is lower than the principle of water density, the air will be separated from the water and enter the air exhaust hollow column by the pressure difference.US2008/190385A1 discloses a deaeration device for a thermal system. The device comprises a reservoir and a fluid conduit configured to create a pressure gradient that facilitates fluid exchange between the conduit and the reservoir.US11260320B1 discloses a cooling agent compensation tank for a cooling circuit.WO2008/060741A1 discloses a deaeration device for deaerating coolant fluid flow in a recirculation cooling system.US11247144B2 discloses a vented degas bottle for a motor vehicle coolant system.Self-bleeding systems for cooling systems for cars are known, for instance comprising a custom-made expansion tank. This system works by directing any air pockets in the coolant toward the expansion tank, where air is vented out through the pressure relief cap.Objects of the present invention It is an object to provide a single self-bleeding coolant device that allows the removal of air, air pockets and (tiny) air bubbles from a closed-loop cooling system by itself. The self-bleeding coolant device do not need to be located in the highest point of the cooling system to remove air from the cooling system. It is also an object to provide a coolant arrangement for electrical systems, wherein said coolant arrangement comprises a closed loop coolant system,The self-bleeding coolant device and arrangement is applicable to electrical outboard and inboard motors as well as other vehicles that make use of electric batteries or electric motors, such as automotive vehicles, buses, or trains.Summary of the inventionAccording to an aspect of the invention, a self-bleeding coolant device for venting of air in a coolant liquid is provided, comprising a hollow coolant tank for accommodating the coolant liquid, and a coolant supply outlet for supply of coolant liquid and a coolant return inlet for receipt of returning coolant liquid. The hollow coolant tank comprises an internal tank pipe connecting said coolant return inlet and said coolant supply outlet, wherein the internal tank pipe comprises venting holes open to the interior of the hollow coolant tank for venting of air in the circulating coolant liquid and/or air in the internal tank pipe.According to a further aspect of the invention, a coolant arrangement for electrical systems is provided, said coolant arrangement comprises a closed loop coolant system with a pump for circulating coolant liquid, wherein a self-bleeding coolant device is disclosed is included in the closed loop.Alternative embodiments of the self-bleeding coolant device and the coolant arrangement are disclosed in respective dependent claims.Description of the figuresEmbodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the following figures, wherein:Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a self-bleeding coolant device according to the invention. Figure 2 shows a cross-sectional view of the self-bleeding coolant device according to the invention.Figure 3 shows a cross-sectional view of the self-bleeding coolant device along line B-B in fig.4.Figure 4 shows a cross-sectional view of the self-bleeding coolant device along line A-A in fig.2.Figure 5 shows a cross-sectional view of the self-bleeding coolant device along line D-D in fig.6.Figure 6 shows a cross-sectional view of the self-bleeding coolant device according to the invention.Figure 7 shows schematic a coolant arrangement with a closed loop coolant system and a cross-sectional view of the self-bleeding coolant device, according to a first embodiment of the invention.Figure 8 shows schematic a coolant arrangement with a closed loop coolant system and a cross-sectional view of the self-bleeding coolant device, according to a second embodiment of the invention.Description of preferred embodiments of the inventionFig. 1 and 2 show an example of a self-bleeding coolant device 20 according to the invention. The self-bleeding coolant device 20 comprises a hollow coolant tank 22 for accommodating a coolant liquid, and a coolant supply outlet 24 for supply of coolant liquid to a coolant system 10 and a coolant return inlet 26 for receipt of returning coolant liquid from the coolant system 10. A coolant arrangement with the coolant system 10 is shown in fig.7 and 8, and shall be explained in more detail later in the description. The hollow coolant tank 22 and other parts of the self-bleeding coolant device 20 can be cast in a plastic material or be made from metal, or a combination thereof. The hollow coolant tank 22 has an interior 46, such as a space or cavity, for accommodating the coolant liquid, for instance to a desired or recommended coolant liquid level 48. The hollow coolant tank 22 is open to a coolant inlet connection 34 for supply of fresh coolant liquid into the coolant tank 22, and an air outlet connection 36 for exhaust air from the coolant tank 22. As shown, the coolant inlet connection 34 for supply of fresh coolant liquid and the air outlet connection 36 for exhaust air can be provided in an upper part of the coolant tank 22. The coolant supply outlet 24 for supply of coolant liquid to the coolant system 10 and the coolant return inlet 26 for receipt of returning coolant liquid from the coolant system 10 are connected by an internal tank pipe 28 comprised within the coolant tank 22. The internal tank pipe 28 can be a pipe, tube, hose or similar capable of conveying the coolant liquid. In the coolant tank 22, the coolant supply outlet 24 is preferably provided opposing the coolant return inlet 26, and the internal tank pipe 28 is running between said coolant return inlet 26 and said coolant supply outlet 24. However, the coolant supply outlet 24 and the coolant return inlet 26 can also be provided on the same or adjacent sides in the coolant tank 22.The internal tank pipe 28 comprises venting holes 30 open to the interior 46 of the hollow coolant tank 22 for venting of air in the circulating coolant liquid. The venting holes 30 can also vent air in the internal tank pipe 28, for instance air from within the cooling system. When the cooling system 10 is being used for the first time it can be full of air before the coolant liquid starts to flow, and this air can also be vented. In the embodiment shown in the figures, the coolant supply outlet 24 is provided in an upper part of the coolant tank 22 and the coolant return inlet 26 is provided in a lower part of the coolant tank 22, and the internal tank pipe 28 is running in a mainly vertical direction between said coolant return inlet 26 and said coolant supply outlet 24.However, the internal tank pipe 28 could also be in a mainly horizontal direction, or any other suitable directions. The self-bleeding device 20 would also work with such a design, as long as the venting holes 30 are under the coolant level 48 in the coolant tank 22.The hollow coolant tank 22 further comprises a connector 38 in fluid communication with the coolant liquid in the coolant tank 22. The connector 38 has a connector neck 40 with an internal fluid channel to the interior 46 of the coolant tank 22. In the embodiment shown in the figures, the connector 38 is provided in a lower part of the coolant tank 22. The connector 38 is strategically placed to prevent the mixture of coolant liquid and air entering the interior 46 of the coolant tank 22 to go directly to the connector neck 40 of the connector 38, and thus preventing the self-bleeding process. Hence, the air that enter the coolant tank 22 through the venting holes 30 is released from the coolant liquid and the air is free to escape out through the air outlet connection 36 for exhaust air from the coolant tank 22. The connector 38 can be a 3-way tube connector comprising an outlet 42 connectable to the coolant return inlet 26 and an inlet 44 connectable to the cooling system 10, as for instance shown in fig.6. Hence, the connector 38 will supply fresh coolant liquid from the coolant tank 22 together with return coolant liquid from the cooling system 10 to the coolant return inlet 26. The outlet 42 and the inlet 44 of the connector 38 can be right-angled to each other, i.e. with 90º angle. As seen particularly in fig.3, the venting holes 30 are small apertures in an external pipe wall 28a of the internal tank pipe 28, wherein the apertures can be provided with an inclined angle in the external pipe wall 28a of the internal tank pipe 28, such that the aperture mouth is facing slightly upwards. The internal tank pipe 28 can in one embodiment have a curved transition 32 between a lower part of the pipe 28 and an upper part of the pipe 28, wherein the venting holes 30 are provided in the curved transition 32, for instance as shown in fig. 6. Here, the curved transition 32 is in the lower part of the internal tank pipe 28, more or less starting right after the coolant return inlet 26. However, the transition 32 does not need to be necessarily curved, it could also be a straight pipe, Due to the positions of coolant supply outlet 24 and the coolant return inlet 26 it is more convenient to have the inner tank pipe 28 with the curvature instead of a straight pipe.By having the small venting holes 30 in an angle it favours that part of the mixture of coolant liquid and air flows into the coolant tank 22 when a pump 12 is working, where most of the coolant liquid goes to devices/units that shall be cooled. The transition from the internal tank pipe 28 to the coolant tank occurs in a turbulent way which helps to dislodge any trapped air bubbles from the coolant liquid. Hence, the air will be trapped inside the coolant tank 22 and only the coolant liquid will go back to the closed-loop cooling system 10. The longer the pump 12 is running, the more air will be removed from the cooling system 10. The large arrows in fig.2 indicate flow direction of the coolant liquid, while the small arrows indicate small amount of cooling liquid and air and air bubbles escaping through the venting holes 30. The escaping air will raise up in the coolant tank 22 and exit through the air outlet connection 36 for exhaust air. Therefore, the present invention enables the removal of air, air pockets and/or tiny air bubbles from the circulating coolant liquid by itself. As shown in fig.7 and 8, the present invention also relates to a coolant arrangement for electrical systems. The coolant arrangement comprises a closed loop coolant system 10 with a pump 12 for circulating coolant liquid. The coolant system 10 comprises devices and units that shall be cooled, and possibly also a heat exhanger. A self-bleeding coolant device 20 as disclosed is included in the closed loop.Reference number 14 indicates coolant supply flow to the coolant system 10, and reference number 16 indicates coolant return flow from the coolant system 10.The coolant arrangement is suitable for a cooling system that needs to remove air from circulating coolant liquid, for instance can the cooling system provide cooling for electrical batteries or electrical motors. The coolant arrangement is suitable for use with electrical outboard or inboard motors. In the embodiment of fig.7, the pump 12 is connected between the connector 38 outlet 42 and the return coolant inlet 26 in the coolant tank 22.In the embodiment of fig.8, the pump 12 is connected between the coolant supply outlet 24 of the coolant tank 22 and the coolant system 10.In a further embodiment (not shown), the pump 12 can be connected between the coolant system 10 and the inlet 44 of the connector 38.The location of the pump 12 relies on its type, for example centrifugal pump versus impeller pump. The coolant system 10 may comprise a coolant filler head (not shown). Hence, the coolant inlet connection 34 for supply of fresh coolant liquid into the coolant tank 22 can be connected to a coolant outlet of the coolant filler head in the coolant system 10, and the air outlet connection 36 for exhaust air from the coolant tank 22 can be connected to an air inlet of said coolant filler head.Such a coolant filler head is thus connectable to the coolant tank 22, for instance in an electrical outboard motor, wherein said filler head 20 comprises a filler body with a filling aperture and a through running boring terminating in a coolant outlet connectable to the coolant supply 14. The coolant filler head can also be capable of venting air in the coolant liquid.
