3494341APPARATUS AND SYSTEM FOR DELOUSING OF INFESTED FISH AND METHOD FOR USE OFSAMEThis invention concerns an apparatus and a system for rapid treatment of fish infected with external parasites. The fish may be a salmonoid fish and the external parasite may 5 be a crustacean parasite such as Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus spp. More particularly the apparatus and system concern to treat fish separated from water with hot air or with steam or with a mixture of hot air and steam for a short period of time, such as between 2 and 10 seconds. The hot air or steam or the mixture of hot air and may be lethal to the external parasite or cause at least injury to the parasite such that the parasite 10 drops off the skin or is no longer able to feed on mucus and skin. The mucus of the fish protects the fish from the short exposure of the hot air or steam or the mixture of hot air and steam. Even more particularly the fish slides by gravity on a cooled base past a treatment area where the fish is exposed to the hot air or steam or the mixture of hot air and steam. The fish slides into a water-filled basin after treatment. The fish passes 15 through the system in less than one minute, such as less than 45 seconds, such as less than 30 seconds. The invention also concerns a method for treatment of fish infected by an external parasite by exposing the fish and the external parasite to hot air or steam or the mixture of hot air and steam.Efficient and cost-effective farming of species in the Salmonidae fish family is often 20 marred by the presence of sea lice in the water. Many efforts have been made to reduce and try to eliminate sea lice from commercial fish farms. One known method is to pump volumes of water and fish onto a vessel where the fish can be cleaned of sea lice using various known techniques and then delivered back to the 3494342water to continue growing. The water is then typically cleaned of sea lice by passing the water through a drum filter which catches the sea lice such that they can be disposed of. Such known out-of-water treatment techniques comprise warm water bath treatment, water jets and brushes. 5 Patent document US 2018/0295816 A1 discloses a system and method for removal of external parasites from fish. In one embodiment the fish is sprayed with fluid from nozzles when the fish is guided through a channel.Patent document US 2018/0153142 A1 discloses a channel for removal of external parasites from fish. The fish are guided through the channel. Nozzles are arranged around the 10 entrance of the channel and around the outlet of the channel. A fluid, such as air, water or a combination of air and water is directed towards the fish that passes through the channel.Patent document NO 20130687 A1 discloses a system for removal of multicellular ectoparasites on fish. A cleaning jet of water is directed towards the surface of the fish which 15 is positioned within a channel. Bubbles of gas are dispersed in the cleaning jet of water.Patent document WO 2023/104282 A1 discloses an apparatus and a method for reducing the number of exterior parasites on fish. The apparatus comprises nozzles that direct a jet of liquid or gas or a mixture of liquid and gas towards the surface of a fish that slides pass the nozzles. 20 The invention has for its object to remedy or to reduce at least one of the drawbacks of the prior art, or at least provide a useful alternative to prior art.The object is achieved through features, which are specified in the description below and in the claims that follow. The invention is defined by the independent patent claims. The dependent claims define 25 advantageous embodiments of the invention. In a first aspect the invention relates more particularly to an apparatus for guiding fish by gravity past a treatment area for killing or injuring an external parasite on a fish. The method comprises the steps of: 3494345- providing the system as described herein;- provide a fish in need of treatment;- transport the fish from the body of water into the separation unit and drain water from the fish; 5 - guide the fish from the separation unit and onto the elongated base on the treatment face;- let the fish slide by gravity past the treatment area;- generate the hot gaseous fluid and pass the hot gaseous fluid through the through openings such that the hot gaseous fluid contacts a surface of the fish; 10 - let the fish slide into the water-filled basin; and- keep the base cool by use of the cooling means. The hot gaseous fluid may comprise hot air at a temperature of between 80 °C and 300 °C, such as between 80 °C and 250 °C, such as between 80 °C and 200 °C, such as between 80 °C and 150 °C. 15 The hot gaseous fluid may comprise steam at a temperature of between 100 °C and 300 °C, such as such as between 100 °C and 250 °C, such as between 100 °C and 200 °C, such as between 80 °C and 175 °C.The hot gaseous fluid may comprise a mixture of hot air and steam at a temperature of between 100 °C and 300 °C, such as such as between 100 °C and 250 °C, such as between 20 100 °C and 200 °C, such as between 80 °C and 175 °C.The elongated base may be kept cool by flowing water of from 0 °C to 20 °C through the hollow ribs. The temperature of the water in the water-filled basin may be within a range of ± 5 °C of the temperature of the body of water. 25 The residence time for the fish within the system is much shorter than by other known out-of-water techniques for treating infected fish. This causes comparable less stress to the fish. Due to the short treatment, the capacity is better, which means that the fish is treated more rapidly after being crowded by a sweep net in a fish pen. I.e., the fish expe 3494346rience a shorter period in the crowded state, and this reduces the stress to the fish as well. The fish in need of treatment may be a salmonoid fish.
