3499181DEVICE AND METHOD FOR CEMENT HANDLINGThe present invention relates to a device for cementing an annulus in a subsea wellbore as well as to a system including such a device with a remotely operable subsea vehicle (ROV) and a tubular extending into a subsea wellbore. The invention also relates to a 5 method for operating the system. When establishing a subsea well, a concentric arrangement of tubulars extends from the seabed down into the formation. The conductor, which is the outermost and largestdiameter pipe, provides the initial structural foundation for the well. From this conductor, the surface casing and smaller-diameter pipes are hung. 10 Before installing the conductor, a large-diameter hole (often 36 inches) is drilled into the seabed. Subsequently, the conductor is landed in this drilled hole. Typically, the conductor has a diameter of 30 or 32 inches. To ensure the well’s structural integrity—both for mechanical stability and pressure integrity—the conductor must be cemented into the hole. 15 Cement is usually pushed centrally down through the conductor, around the “shoe” at the bottom, and filling the annulus between the outer diameter of the conductor and the initially drilled hole from below. The goal is for the cement to reach all the way to the top of the conductor. The amount of cement needed is typically determined through prior calculations. 20 However, cement shortfall is a common occurrence. This can happen due to the hydrostatic pressure of the cement slurry on exposed formations, potentially breaking down a weak formation zone. Detecting such a shortfall subsea is challenging and may necessitate a compromise in the well’s structural integrity. 3499182The invention has for its object to remedy or to reduce at least one of the drawbacks of the prior art, or at least provide a useful alternative to prior art.The object is achieved through features, which are specified in the description below and 5 in the claims that follow. The invention is defined by the independent patent claims. The dependent claims define advantageous embodiments of the invention. In a first aspect the invention relates to a device for cementing an annulus in a subsea well, the device comprising: 10 - an inlet for a fluidised plugging material;- one or more outlets for the fluidised plugging material, the one or more outlets being adapted to extend into an anulus between a tubular and a wall of a wellbore surrounding the tubular in the subsea well;- a connector for connecting the device to an upper portion of the tubular; 15 - an input member for receiving power to operate the connector between an idle position, in which the device is not connected to the tubular, and an active position in which the device is connected to the tubular. The fluidised plugging material may typically be cement. However, in other embodiments it may be resin-based plugging materials, quick clay, loose mass or other materials that 20 may be used as alternatives to cement. In one embodiment, the connector may be a clamp operable between an open position in which it is not connected to the tubular and a closed position around the tubular. The clamp may e.g. include two portions adapted to close around the tubular such as by pivoting. The two portions may or may not be substantially the same size and cover equal 25 portions of the circumference of the tubular. In one embodiment, the connector may include three clamp portion, each of the clamp portions substantially forming a circular arc, where the first and second portions are pivotally connected to a third, stationary portion. In one embodiment, the third, stationary portion may cover approximately 180° of 3499183the circumference while the first and second clamp portions cover approximately 90° each.In alternative embodiments, the connector may include a bracket or a claw connecting to the upper edge of the tubular. 5 In one embodiment the input member may be a hydraulic input member adapted to receive a hydraulic fluid for operating the connector between the idle and active positions. In one embodiment, the input member may be a hydraulic receptable / (female) connector for receiving a hydraulic stab (male connector). The hydraulic receptacle may include a plurality of hydraulic inlets/ports to operate a plurality of different functions of 10 the connector. Hydraulic fluids may flow into and out from each of the inlets in the hydraulic receptacle. In one embodiment the hydraulic receptacle may include six or more ports to operate three or more hydraulic cylinders in both directions, each cylinder being connected to a plus port for extending a stroke of a piston rod and a minus port for retracting the piston 15 rod. As will be explained in the following, first and second cylinders may be used to fold the first and second clamp portions around a tubular, while a third cylinder may be used to lock/tighten the first and second clamp portions firmly together. An advantage of using a hydraulic connection with multiple inlets/ports, is that one connection may be sufficient to perform several functions on the device, such as the hydraulic functions exemplified 20 above. As such, it may be possible to install the device to a tubular by means of a single ROV, as will be explained below. However, in an alternative embodiment, the input member may be mechanical input member, such as an input member adapted to connect to a torque tool on a ROV for operation of the connector. 25 In one embodiment the direction of the inlet may be provided substantially perpendicularly to direction of the one or more outlets. In a position of use, the outlets may extend down into an annulus surrounding the tubular. Arranging the inlet to be perpendicular to the outlets may therefore contribute to easy access to the inlet for connection to a hose 3499184or similar. The inlet may also be angled otherwise relative the outlets, such as between 90 and 180°.In one embodiment, the device may comprise two or more outlets, where the two or more outlets may be arranged with a distance therebetween along a substantially circular 5 arc. Providing two or more outlets with a distance between them, may lead to a more even distribution of cement, or another fluidised plugging material, in the annulus. Arranging the outlets along a circular arc may provide a better fit in the annulus. In certain embodiments, there may be two, three, four, five, six or even more outlets arranged with a distance between them along said circular arc. The two or more outlets may also be 10 provided at different depths in the annulus, e.g. by having outlet pipes with different lengths. In one embodiment outlet pipes may be arranged symmetrically around a longer pipe in the middle and with gradually shorter pipes from the middle towards the ends of the arc.In one embodiment the arc may define a segment of 60 to 270°, preferably 90-180° and 15 most preferably around 120°. By leaving a segment not covered by the circular arc of outlets, room is left for displacement/swapping of water, which may also be important for an even distribution of cement or another fluidised plugging material. Experiments have shown that a segment of around 120° with four to six, preferably five outlets evenly spaced and optionally with a longer pipe in the middle, provides an optimal distribution of 20 cement or other fluidised plugging materials into the annulus. In one embodiment the inlet may be connected to a guiding structure for guiding a free end of a hose into connection with the inlet. The guiding structure may e.g. a funnel, simplifying connection of the of the hose to the inlet, such as by an ROV.In one embodiment, the device may include an ROV handle. The ROV handle may be a 25 standardised handle to be gripped by a manipulator of an ROV and/or another structure enabling an ROV to connect to and carry the device in water. In a second aspect, the invention relates to a system for cementing an annulus in a subsea wellbore, the system including a device according to the first aspect of the invention and 3499185further comprising:- a tubular in the subsea wellbore;- the one or more outlets of the device being positioned in an annulus formed between the tubular and the subsea wellbore 5 - an ROV for carrying the device and for connecting an output member to the input member on the device for powering and operating the connector. The output member may be a part of the ROV or the ROV may carry the output member to connect the device to a separate power source. In one embodiment, the ROV may be provided with a hydraulic power unit and a hydraulic stab to connect to the input mem- 10 ber receptacle on the device, or the ROV may be provided with a battery (or hydraulic power unit) and an output member in the form of a torque tool. Alternatively, the ROV may assist in connecting the input member on the device to a separate power source and output member. This may e.g. be a hydraulic power unit provided subsea or topside. In one embodiment the tubular may be a conductor. However, it may also be a surface 15 casing, or another tubular placed in a hole in the seabed. The device will typically connect to a stick-up of the tubular above the seabed. The device as such, when connected to the tubular, may be suspended freely radially outwardly from the tubular, or if may be resting on the seabed or a supporting structure provided on the seabed around the stick-up, such as a mud mat. 20 In a third aspect, the invention relates to method for operating a system according to the second aspect of the invention, the method including the steps of:- operating the ROV to connect the device to an upper portion of the tubular,- operating the ROV to connect the outlet of a hose to the inlet of the device; and - pumping a fluidised plugging material through the hose, to the inlet and out through the 25 one or more outlets into the annulus around the tubular. The source of the fluidised plugging material may typically be provided topside on a floating vessel which connects to the device through a hose. The device according to the invention, enables cementing wellbore annuli without needing a drilling rig, though use of a drilling rig is not excluded. 3499186The device and system according to the invention may be used to top up an already cemented annulus where there has been a shortfall, or the device and system may be used to cement a not previously cemented annulus.By “upper portion”, is meant to a portion sticking up above the seabed, though it will be 5 understood that the one or more outlets may extend downwardly to a position in the annulus below the seabed. Alternatively, the outlets may open up into the annulus from immediately above the seabed. In one embodiment, the method may, after pumping of fluidised plugging material, further include the steps of: 10 - disconnecting the hose from the device; and- removing the device from the tubular.Alternatively, the device may be removed from the tubular with the hose still connected to it. 15 In the following is described an example of a preferred embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:Fig.1 shows a device according to the present invention in a first perspective view;Fig.2 shows a device according to the present invention in a second perspective 20 view;Fig.3 shows, in a first perspective view, a device according to the present invention connected to a tubular;Fig.4 shows, in a second perspective view, a device according to the present invention connected to a tubular; 25 Fig.5 shows, in a perspective view, a device according to the present invention in an open position; 3499187Fig.6 shows the device from Fig.5 in a partly closed position; andFig.7 shows the device from Figs.5 and 6 in a closed position. In the following, reference numeral 1 will be used to denote an exemplary device accord- 5 ing to the invention, while reference numeral 10 will be used to denote a tubular to which the device 1 connects. In the figures, same or corresponding elements are indicated by same reference numerals. For clarity reasons, some elements may in some of the figures be with-out reference numerals. 10 A person skilled in the art will understand that the figures are just principal drawings. The relative proportions of individual elements may also be distorted. Any positional indications refer to the position shown in the figures.Figs. 1 and 2 show the device according to the invention in different perspective views. The device 1 is adapted to connect to a tubular 10, here in the form of a conductor, as 15 shown in Figs.3 and 4. The device 1 is provided with an inlet 3 for fluidised plugging material to which a free end of a not shown hose may be connected. The hose may typically be terminated with standardised subsea connector adapted to mate with the inlet 3. In the shown embodiment, the inlet 3 is provided at the bottom of a guiding structure 5 in the form of a funnel. This makes it simpler to connect a hose to the inlet 3, typically by 20 means of a manipulator of a not shown ROV. An inlet pipe 7 extends from the inlet 3 and to an arc-shaped cement manifold 9. From the cement manifold 9 a plurality of outlet pipes 11, here five, extends downwardly to define five outlets 13. The mid outlet pipe is longer than the others, with the outer outlet pipes shortest and remaining pipes with a length in between so that the outlet pipes 11 are symmetrically arranged around the mid 25 pipe. The outlet pipes 11 are supported on a recessed/porous support plate 15 shaped to substantially follow the length of the outlet pipes 13. A flange segment 17 extends radially outwardly from the support plate 15 substantially at the middle height of the device 1. The flange segment 17 supports a ROV handle 19 extending from the flange segment 17 3499188and upwardly towards a 90° bend and into the cement manifold 9. The ROV handle 19 also includes lower gripping bar 21 above the flange segment 17 and parallel to a plane defined by the flange segment 17. In use, the flange segment 17 will flush with the seabed S and cover a portion of an annulus between the tubular 10 and an inner wall of a 5 surrounding wellbore as a lid, as shown in Figs.3 and 4. In the shown embodiment, the flange segment 17 and outlet pipes 11 cover an arc corresponding to a circle sector of approximately 120°.The upper portion of the device 1 is provided with a connector 22, here in the form of a circular clamp with a first clamp portion 24 and a second clamp portion 26. Each of the 10 first and second clamp portions 24, 26 are pivotably connected to a third stationary, rear clamp portion 28 through rotation bolts 30. Each of the first, second and third clamp portions are lined with a friction pads 32 to ensure a good frictional fit with the tubular 10. In the shown embodiment, the first and second clamp portions 24, 26 cover approximately 90° each, while the third, stationary clamp portion 28 covers approximately 180° of the 15 circumference of the tubular 10.The device 1 further comprises an input member 34, here in the form of a hydraulic receptacle, for receiving power from an external source, which in this embodiment will be in the form of a hydraulic supply. A not shown hydraulic stab/connector fits complementary into the receptable 34 to provide control of the connector 22. In the shown embodi- 20 ment the connector 22 comprises three different hydraulic cylinders; a first cylinder 36 for operating the first clamp portion 24, and second cylinder 38 for operating the second clamp portion 26 and a third cylinder 40 for tightening the connection between first and second clamp portions, as will be explained with reference to Figs.5-7. For each of the cylinders 36, 38, 40 the receptacle 34 includes not shown ports for individual control of 25 cylinders in both directions, i.e. inlet ports for each cylinder to pressure either side of not shown pistons. The hydraulic connection between the receptacle 34 and the cylinders 36, 38, 40 is not shown in detail in the drawings. A distal end of piston rods 37, 39 for both the first and second cylinders 36, 38 are pivotably connected to extended diameter portions 42, 44, respectively , of the first and second clamp portions 24, 26 at rotation bolts 349918941. Rear cylinder portions 43, 45 of the cylinders 36, 38 are pivotally connected to the third, rear clamp portion 28 via respective first and second brackets 46, 48 at rotation bolts 49. The hydraulic receptacle 34 is also connected to the first bracket 46.In Fig.5 the connector 22 is in its idle/open position. Both the first and second clamp por- 5 tions 24, 26 are swung/pivoted outwardly, so that the device 1 may be brought around a tubular 10 (not shown in this fig.). In the open position both the first cylinder 36 and the second cylinder 38 have their respective piston rods 37, 39 in a retracted position, while the third cylinder has its piston rod in an extended position (at least before the first clamp portion 24 folds around the tubular 10). In order to fold the clamp 22 around a tubular, 10 the second cylinder 38 is first energised by supply of hydraulic fluid to extend its position rod 39. By extending the piston rod 39 the second clamp portion 26 is pivoted inwardly so that it folds inwardly as indicated in Fig.6. The first clamp portion 24 is then similarly pivoted inwardly by energising the first cylinder 36 so that its respective piston rod 37 is extended. A claw 50 at a distal end of the first clamp portion folds around a vertically ar- 15 ranged locking bolt 52 at a distal end of the second clamp portion 26. In order to securely lock the first and second clamp portions 24, 26 together and to tighten the grip around tubular 10, the third cylinder is energised by retracting its piston rod 41, whereby the claw 50 at the distal end of the first clamp portion enters from the position where it folds around the locking bolt 52 into a secure locking position where it engages the locking bolt 20 52. The device is now securely connected to the (not shown) tubular. A single hydraulic connection with multiple ports may thereby be used to energise different functions and to securely lock the device 1 to the tubular 10. A not shown hose may thereafter be connected to the inlet 3 if the connection has not already been made.In order to remove the device 1 from the tubular 10, the connection procedure presented 25 above may be run in reverse. It should be noted that the above-mentioned embodiments illustrate rather than limit the invention, and that those skilled in the art will be able to design many alternative embodiments without departing from the scope of the appended claims. In the claims, any reference signs placed between parentheses shall not be construed as limiting the claim. Use 34991810of the verb "comprise" and its conjugations does not exclude the presence of elements or steps other than those stated in a claim. The article "a" or "an" preceding an element does not exclude the presence of a plurality of such elements. The mere fact that certain measures are recited in mutually different dependent claims 5 does not indicate that a combination of these measures cannot be used to advantage.
