3495371Bottom support bearingField of the inventionThe present invention relates to the field of liquid agitation equipment, more 5 specifically a bottom support bearing for an impeller shaft and a liquid container comprising the bottom support bearing.Background10 In many applications and processes it is necessary to agitate a liquid in a tank or container. The agitation of a liquid may for instance be intended to keep solids in suspension, homogenize a liquid mixture or improve heat distribution in a liquid. The requirement of keeping solids suspended in various liquids may be found in 15 different settings. For example, in the oil and gas industry agitators are used to keep the solids (e.g. sand) in drilling fluid suspended and not deposited at the bottom of a mud tank or mud pit.Agitating high viscosity or heavy fluids, such as drilling fluid, often requires the use 20 of a bottom support bearing, also called a steady bearing, to stabilize the agitator shaft running the impeller. The agitation of drilling fluid is particularly challenging since the suspended solids, e.g. sand, is highly abrasive and leads quickly to extensive wear of the bottom 25 support bearing and increased maintenance. It is not uncommon that a bottom support bearing needs to be replaced or serviced every fifth to seventh week.CN211537386U discloses a bottom support assembly for a stirring shaft, consisting of a centralizing sleeve arranged at the bottom of a mud tank and a bearing arranged 30 at the lower end of the stirring shaft. The bearing is in contact with the surrounding mud during use.CA2495762A1 discloses an agitator having a bearing support disposed on the bottom of a mud tank. Details of the bearing support are not disclosed.35US3489469A discloses a bearing for a rotatable agitator shaft in a mixing tank. The bearing is configured such that when submerged in a fluid, an internal hydrostatic pressure will prevent the fluid from contacting an inner part of the bearing.40 The aim of the present invention is to provide an improved bottom support bearing suitable for use in tanks in which liquids are to be agitated. 3495372Summary of the inventionThe present invention is defined by the appended claims and in the following:5 In a first aspect, the present invention provides a bottom support bearing for an impeller shaft, the bearing comprising a shaft unit and a base unit;the shaft unit comprises a vertical shaft, a shaft head arranged at an upper end of the vertical shaft, and a sidewall extending downwards from the shaft head and surrounding the vertical shaft, i.e. surrounding at least an upper part of the vertical 10 shaft;the base unit comprises a base and a hollow cylinder mounted onto the base, and the hollow cylinder accommodates the vertical shaft of the shaft unit, such that the shaft unit may rotate relative to the base unit, i.e. the shaft unit may rotate around the central axis of the vertical shaft; wherein15 an inner surface of the sidewall and an outer surface, i.e. an outer peripheral/circumferential surface, of the hollow cylinder defines a cylinder-shaped space being in fluid communication with the surroundings at a level below an upper end of the hollow cylinder, and whereinthe vertical shaft of the shaft unit is hollow and has an open lower end, the base unit 20 comprises a lubricant inlet and a lubricant outlet in fluid communication with the lower end of the vertical shaft, and a wall of the vertical shaft of the shaft unit comprises at least one lubricant passage extending between an internal space of the vertical shaft and an inner surface of the hollow cylinder.25 The shaft head is configured to be directly or indirectly connected to the lower end of an impeller shaft. The hollow cylinder of the base unit may alternatively be termed a vertical sleeve.30 The cylinder-shaped space may be configured such that air is prevented from escaping the cylinder-shaped space when a fluid is provided to the cylinder-shaped space at a level below an upper end of the hollow cylinder. The cylinder-shaped space may be in fluid communication with the surroundings at 35 a level below an upper end of the hollow cylinder. The cylinder-shaped space may extend from the shaft head to at least halfway between the shaft head and the base.40 The cylinder shaped space may be in fluid communication with the surroundings of the bottom support bearing at a level below an upper end of the hollow cylinder, 3495373preferably at a level below the middle height or middle point of the hollow cylinder, i.e. at a level below a halfway point or mark between the shaft head and the base. The cylinder shaped space may be in fluid communication with the surroundings of 5 the bottom support bearing via at least one opening, the opening arranged at a level below an upper end of the hollow cylinder, preferably at a level below the middle height or middle point of the hollow cylinder, i.e. at a level below a halfway point or mark between the shaft head and the base.10 The surfaces defining the cylinder-shaped space may provide a fluid-tight boundary surface extending from the shaft head to a level below an upper end of the hollow cylinder or to a level below the middle height or middle point of the hollow cylinder, i.e. at a level below a halfway point or mark between the shaft head and the base.15In an embodiment, the bottom support bearing according to the invention may comprise at least one opening between the cylinder-shaped space and the surroundings of the bearing, the opening being arranged at a level below an upper end of the hollow cylinder, or at a level below the middle height or middle point of 20 the hollow cylinder, and the cylinder-shaped space is in fluid communication with the surroundings via the opening. In an embodiment of the bottom support bearing according to the invention, the at least one opening comprises or is a gap between a lower end of the sidewall and the 25 base.In other words, the bottom support bearing may comprise a gap between a lower end of the sidewall and the base, e.g. between the lower end of the sidewall and an upwards directed surface of the base.30The gap may have a height being less than the height of the sidewall, less than 1/5, 1/10, 1/15 or 1/20 of the height of the sidewall. The gap may have a height up to 1/2, 1/5, 1/10, 1/15 or 1/20 of the height of the sidewall.35 In an embodiment of the bottom support bearing, at least an upper portion of the cylinder-shaped space is delimited or defined by a fluid-tight boundary surface. The surfaces defining any part of the cylinder-shaped space being arranged at a level above the opening may provide a fluid-tight boundary surface.40In an embodiment of the bottom support bearing at least an upper boundary surface of the cylinder-shaped space is fluid-tight, i.e. such that a fluid may only enter the 3495374cylinder-shaped space from the surroundings via a lower portion of the cylindershaped space. The fluid-tight boundary surface may extend between the gap and the shaft head, 5 alternatively the fluid-tight boundary surface may extend between any opening providing fluid communication to the cylinder-shaped space and the shaft head. In an embodiment of the bottom support bearing, the portion of the cylinder-shaped space being delimited or defined by the fluid-tight boundary surface extends down 10 from the shaft head and has a height being at least half the height of the outer surface of the hollow cylinder. In an embodiment of the bottom support bearing, the fluid-tight boundary surface may comprise at least an upper portion of the inner surface of the sidewall, a 15 downward surface of the shaft head and at least an upper portion of the outer surface of the hollow cylinder. The fluid tight boundary surface may be formed or provided by at least an upper portion of the inner surface of the sidewall, a downward surface of the shaft head 20 and at least an upper portion of the outer surface of the hollow cylinder. In an embodiment of the bottom support bearing, the height of the sidewall may be configured such that air pressure formed within the cylinder-shaped space, when the bearing is submerged in a liquid during use (and the liquid enters the cylinder-25 shaped space), is equal to or larger than a hydrostatic pressure of the surrounding liquid at a level below an upper end of the hollow cylinder or at a level corresponding to a level halfway up on the hollow cylinder. In an embodiment of the bottom support bearing, the base unit may comprise a 30 vertical pipe arranged within the hollow cylinder, the vertical pipe having a lower opening connected to the lubricant outlet and an upper opening. The upper opening may be arranged at a predetermined level which ensures that a sufficient amount of lubricant is present within the vertical shaft when lubricant is provided through the lubricant inlet and excess lubricant is exiting the lubricant outlet. The upper 35 opening may be arranged at a level corresponding to the halfway point, or higher, of the hollow cylinder. In an embodiment of the bottom support bearing, the hollow cylinder may comprise an insert surrounding the vertical shaft of the shaft unit, the insert comprises 40 grooves in fluid communication with the at least one lubricant passage. 3495375In an embodiment of the bottom support bearing, the hollow cylinder may comprise at least one seal ring sealing against the vertical shaft of the shaft unit.In an embodiment of the bottom support bearing, the at least one lubricant passage 5 may be arranged at a level below the at least one seal ring.In a second aspect, the present invention provides a liquid container comprising a bottom support bearing according to any embodiment of the first aspect. The fluid container may be any type of tank or container suitable for agitating a liquid 10 therein, such as a mud container, mud pit etc.In an embodiment, the liquid container may comprise an agitator featuring an impeller shaft, wherein a lower end of the impeller shaft is connected to the shaft head of the bottom support bearing.15The hollow cylinder of the base unit may alternatively be termed a vertical sleeve.20 Description of the drawingsEmbodiments of the invention is described in detail by reference to the following drawings:25 Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a bottom support bearing according to an embodiment of the present invention.Fig. 2 is a side view of the bottom support bearing in fig.1.30 Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the bottom support bearing in fig.1.Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the bottom support bearing in fig.1.Fig. 5 is a top view of the bottom support bearing in fig.1.35Fig. 6 is a sectional view of a shaft unit of the bottom support bearing in fig.1. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of a base unit of the bottom support bearing in fig.1. 40 Fig. 8 is an enlarged view showing details of the base unit in fig.7. 3495376Figs. 9 and 10 is a sectional view of the bottom support bearing in fig.1 illustrating the bottom support bearing being submerged in a liquid.Fig. 11 is a perspective view of an agitator having its impeller shaft connected to 5 the bottom support bearing in fig.1.Detailed description of embodiments of the invention10 As discussed above, a problem with the prior art bottom support bearings used to support an impeller shaft in e.g. mud tanks, is that the bearings are maintenance intensive due to excessive wear. The present invention provides a bottom support bearing in which wear is15 significantly reduced. An embodiment of a bottom support bearing according to the present invention is illustrated in figs. 1-10, and a schematic drawing of a tank comprising the bottom support bearing and an agitator is shown in fig.11.20The bottom support bearing 1 comprises two distinct elements, a shaft unit 2, see fig. 6, and a base unit 3, see fig.7.The shaft unit 2 comprises a vertical shaft 4, a shaft head 5 arranged at an upper end 25 of the vertical shaft 4, and a sidewall 6 extending downwards from the shaft head 5 and surrounding the vertical shaft 4. The shaft head 5 is configured to be directly or indirectly connected to the lower end of an impeller shaft 14, see fig.11.The base unit 3 comprises a base 7 and a hollow cylinder 8 mounted onto the base 30 7. The hollow cylinder 8 is configured to accommodate the vertical shaft 4 of the shaft unit 2, such that the shaft unit 2 may rotate relative to the base unit 3.The hollow cylinder 8 comprises a pair of seal rings 14a,14b sealing against the vertical shaft 4 of the shaft unit 2, see fig.8.35An inner surface 10 of the sidewall 6 and an outer surface 11 of the hollow cylinder 8 defines a cylinder-shaped space 9. The cylinder-shaped space is only in fluid communication with the surroundings via a gap 12 (i.e. opening) formed between a lower end of the sidewall 6 and the base 7. Above the gap 12, the surfaces defining 40 the cylinder-shaped space provides a fluid-tight boundary surface. 3495377During use of the bottom support bearing, i.e. when supporting the lower end of an impeller shaft 14 stirring a liquid L in a tank, the configuration of the sidewall 6 ensures that the vertical shaft 4 and the seal rings 14a,14b do not come in contact with the liquid L in which the bottom support bearing 1 is submerged. Thus, 5 excessive wear of the seal rings due to corrosive or abrasive components of the liquid is prevented.Fluid contact with the vertical shaft 4 and the seal rings 14a,14b is prevented by ensuring that the air pressure P1 in the cylinder-shaped space 9 is always equal to or 10 larger than the hydrostatic pressure P2 of the surrounding liquid L at a level below an upper end 18 of the hollow cylinder 8, see figs.9 and 10. The effect of the sidewall 6 is illustrated as a two-step sequence. Initially, during addition of a liquid L to a tank, in which the bottom support bearing 1 is arranged, the liquid L enters the cylinder-shaped space via the gap 12, fig.9. The air pressure in the cylinder-15 shaped space 9 will gradually increase until all the liquid L has been added to the tank and the air pressure P1 and the hydrostatic pressure P2 is equalized, fig.10. The necessary height of the sidewall 6, and/or the cylinder-shaped space 9, required to obtain a sufficient air pressure will depend on both the density of the liquid and 20 the liquid level in the tank (i.e. the size of the hydrostatic pressure). Thus, depending on the height and density of the liquid, the height of the sidewall 6, or the cylinder-shaped space 9, is configured such that air pressure P1 formed within the cylinder-shaped space 9, when the bottom support bearing 1 is submerged in a liquid L, is equal to or larger than the hydrostatic pressure P2 of the surrounding 25 liquid at a level below an upper end 18 of the hollow cylinder 8. Preferably, the air pressure P1 formed within the cylinder-shaped space 9 should be equal to or higher than the hydrostatic pressure P2 of the surrounding liquid at a level at the halfway point of the hollow cylinder 8, as seen in fig.10.30 In addition to being highly wear resistant, the inventive bottom support bearing 1 features an advantageous lubricant system, as described below, further prolonging the service interval. The lubricant system makes it possible to fill the bottom support assembly with lubricant, as well as changing the lubricant, after assembly of the shaft unit 2 and the base unit 3.35The lubricant system requires the vertical shaft 4 of the shaft unit 2 to be hollow and have an open lower end 22. The base unit 3 comprises a lubricant inlet 21 and a lubricant outlet 20 in fluid communication with the lower end 22 of the vertical shaft. To ensure that the lubricant may be provided at a sufficient level within the 40 vertical shaft, the base unit 3 comprises a vertical pipe 19 arranged within the hollow cylinder 8. The vertical pipe 19 has a lower opening connected to the lubricant outlet 20 and an upper opening at a predetermined level within the vertical 3495378shaft 4. The level of the upper opening defines the maximum level of lubricant within the vertical shaft 4. When the bottom support bearing is installed in a tank, external access to the lubricant inlet 21 and the lubricant outlet 20 may be provided, e.g. connected to a lubricant source/storage through the tank bottom, such that 5 lubricant service may be performed without emptying the tank of fluids or dismounting any part of the bottom support bearing 1.To ensure optimum transfer of lubricant to the outside of the vertical shaft 4, a wall of the vertical shaft 4 features at least one lubricant passage 17 arranged at a level 10 below the sealing rings 14a,14b. The lubricant passage 17 extends between the internal space of the vertical shaft 4, i.e. the hollow in which the vertical pipe 19 is arranged, and an inner surface of the hollow cylinder 8. The hollow cylinder 8 comprises an insert 15 surrounding the vertical shaft 4. The insert has grooves 16 in fluid communication with the lubricant passage 17, such that the lubricant is 15 distributed along the outside of the vertical shaft 4.2025303540
