3498841Technical Field[001] The present invention relates to a sealed synthetic pipe assembly with at least one synthetic pipe segment connected utilizing a connector sleeve on the outside of the least one synthetic pipe segment.[002] The present invention is particularly adapted for connecting synthetic pipe segments made of composite material, thermoplastic material with or without fibre strands in the matrix, a thermoset fibre composite material, or of layers of different composite materials. The invention is relevant to both single layered composite pipe segments and multi-layered composite pipe segments.[003] The invention is adapted for connecting pipe segments forming a sealed pipe for fluids, in particular for a velocity string. Background and Prior Art[004] The use of composite material in pipe segments is of interest to the oil and gas industry. Composite materials are cost effective, corrosion resistant and lightweight.[005] The term synthetic material is used to describe all variations of composite materials, thermoplastic material with or without fibre strands in the matrix, a thermoset fibre composite material, or of layers of different composite materials.[006] Patent application publication WO 2023/146408 A1, application PCT/NO2023/050013, “A pipe section and method for completion of a pipe string for deployment into a subsurface well”, teaches how sand screens pipe segments can be constructed with multiple layered composite material pipe. Multiple layered composite material pipe may benefit from this innovation.[007] An application of particular interest is velocity pipe. As the pressure in oil and gas producing formations decline, the production rates also decline, and the velocity of the hydrocarbon flow stream reduces. At some point, the velocity gets so low that the water fraction in the flow stream no longer flows to the surface and water can accumulate in the production pipe string. This phenomenon is called water loading and when enough water has accumulated, the well is no longer capable of producing. The known remedy is to install 3498842a smaller production pipe inside the existing production pipe. This will increase the velocity of the production stream and the water fraction is again produced out of the well with the hydrocarbons. The smaller production pipe is called a velocity string and installing this cost less than replacing the original production string. Since wells with water loading often are near the end of economic use, land wells and platform wells accessible with low-cost rigs that get a velocity string installed. Velocity strings are not usually installed in subsea wells as the offshore rigs are expensive to use. A method for installing Velocity strings in subsea wells Equinor Energy AS and S. K. Andersen, simplified velocity string installation method, Kenneth Mason Publications, volume, 44, ISSN 0374-435. This method is based on setting a plug deep in the well first, then installing the velocity above the plug, finally utilizing the inner diameter of the velocity sting to remove or remotely open the deep set. Please observe that the publication only shows the velocity string deployed with (another) pipe string. Reducing the weight of the velocity string by use of synthetic material, so that it is possible to deploy it into the well with a wireline cable, will reduce installation cost.Reducing installation cost is the benefit that motivates this invention. The lower weight can come from using synthetic material and an effective connection method.[008] WO 2019/147123 A1 (KASIM, A. B. et al.), 2019.08.01 discuss using reinforced thermoplastic pipe on coil as a velocity string. Having the velocity string on a coil avoids the challenge of developing a suitable connection. The installation method discussed depends on the velocity string having uniform outer, this is easier done with coiled pipe more difficult to do with jointed pipe. However, a coil of velocity pipe at the size and length required is too big for road transport from manufacturing site to naval support base and may require modifications to dedicated installation vessels. Jointed pipe segments in 12 m lengths are far more convenient to transport to an installation location.[009] To find a synthetic material suitable for downhole conditions, temperature, pressure, aromatic crude oil, salt water and high pH, this inventor has looked at advanced thermoplastics. The candidate materials that can be suitable have high yield strength, can withstand temperatures up to 120°C and are inert to the well environment. Once the material is selected, it is unknown to this inventor how well it can be machined, welded, or glued. This leaves the connection method invention constraint to only cut to length and drill holes in the pipe section. So perhaps not surprising, and novel yet again, the connection method shown here reminds us of early day steel connections, where steel plates were cut to size, pierced with holes, and connected with steel plates and rivets. 3498843[0010] When joining synthetic pipe sections, the result is typically a permanent joint with an increased diameter or a releasable joint that is unable to withstand stresses. Bolted joints are typically used for joining tubes used for their mechanical properties in metal structures in areas where protruding bolts and sleeves are accepted.[0011] US 4865356 discloses a composite tubular joint with thickened end sections designed to match the stiffness of the thinner tube walls. An inner band inside the tube ends and an outer band around them are clamped by bolts that pass through sealed sleeves in the outer band and tube ends, threading into outward-facing capture plates on the inner band; locking nuts secure the bolts. Seals are provided between the inner band and tube interiors.[0012] US 9382936 discloses a threaded insert with thermal insulation capability. The thermally-insulative insert device includes internal and external threads, allows attachment of an assembled part to a heat source while reducing heat transfer.[0013] US 6601698 discloses a device for linking conveyor belts. A junction device for a conveyor belt comprises an upper part, a lower part and an intermediate part. Inserts are used to assemble parts using screws. Inserts are used to assemble the junction device at the ends of a conveyor belt.US 3566947 discloses a self-locking insert with a generally tubular shape. Substantial portions of the exterior and the interior are threaded. When installing the insert, a threaded tool is threaded into the interior of the insert until it engages an unthreaded portion of an inner wall. The insert is then threaded into a tapped hole in a base material until a flanged or outwardly flared head on the exterior of the insert engages a base material.Summary of the invention[0014] The present invention concerns connections utilizing radial holes fitted with threaded inserts with flanges and an opposing internal and threaded intermediate inserts in pipe segments. The internal threads of the threaded intermediate inserts are subsequently utilized to bolt on a connector sleeve for connecting the pipe segments into a pipe string.[0015] Each connection utilises radial holes fitted with threaded intermediate inserts in the pipe segments and a connector sleeve connecting the pipe segments into a pipe string. 3498844[0016] Sealing rings may be located around the threaded inserts, the threaded intermediate inserts and at the ends of each pipe segment to form sealed connections. Sealing rings may also be located between the pipe segments and the connector sleeve.[0017] The connection is thus fluid tight, sealed connection.[0018] The pipe segments may include a reduced diameter recessed portion and the connector sleeve may have the same outer diameter as the pipe segments and the same inner diameter as the recessed portion, thus forming a flush connection.[0019] Accordingly, the present invention concerns a sealed synthetic pipe assembly for conveying fluids. The sealed synthetic pipe assembly includes a pipe segment with a pipe end section and an end section wall. A tubular connecting sleeve with a sleeve wall and a plurality of holes, extend through the sleeve wall. A plurality of end section holes extends through each end section wall and conform with the plurality of holes extending through the sleeve wall. A threaded insert with an insert flange, extends through each of the end section holes. A threaded intermediate insert with an intermediate insert flange, internal threads and external threads is screwed into each threaded insert. The intermediate insert flanges of the threaded intermediate inserts are opposing the insert flange of the threaded inserts, holding the the threaded inserts and the threaded intermediate inserts in place, reinforcing the end section hole. A threaded mechanical fastener is screwed through the internal threads of each of the threaded intermediate inserts.[0020] The flange can be given the same curvature as the inner diameter of the pipe, thus eliminating need to machine around the hole in the synthetic material.[0021] The sealed synthetic pipe assembly may furthermore include a first sealing ring between each threaded insert and the end section wall.[0022] A second sealing ring may be located between each threaded intermediate insert and the end section wall. Each pipe end section may include a circular end wall, and at least one sealing ring may be located between the circular end walls of two pipe end sections.[0023] A diameter of each end section hole may be 1 to 2 times a wall thickness of the pipe segment.[0024] The number of end section holes extending through each end section wall and conforming with the plurality of holes extending through the sleeve wall may be between 8 and 16. 3498845[0025] The end section holes may be evenly spaced with 4 to 6 holes on each row spaced 60 °s to 90 °s on the circumference.[0026] The end section holes may be evenly spaced at a distance 0.5 to 2 times the outer diameter of the pipe segment between each row.[0027] The sealed synthetic pipe may be made of a composite material.[0028] The composite material may be a fibre reinforced material.[0029] The sealed synthetic pipe may be made with a plurality of layers.[0030] The tubular connecting sleeve may be made of high tensile strength steel and may have a thickness of 10% to 30% of that of the pipe segment.[0031] The threaded mechanical fastener may be a machine screw with a countersunk head.[0032] The pipe end section may be recessed to a diameter corresponding to an inner diameter of the connecting sleeve, and the connecting sleeve may be located in this recess.[0033] The outer diameter of the connecting sleeve may be the same as an outer diameter of the pipe segments, thus forming a flush connection both on the inside and the outside of the connection.[0034] Furthermore, the invention concerns sealed synthetic pipe assembly as described above deployed as a velocity string inside a production tubing with wireline.[0035] Furthermore, the invention concerns first sealed synthetic pipe assembly with a pipe segment as described above connected to a second sealed synthetic pipe.[0036] The tubular connecting sleeve may be secured to a conventional box end with inner threads connecting the pipe segment to a conventional steel pipe with a pin end.[0037] Furthermore, the invention concerns a use of a sealed synthetic pipe assembly as described above for conveying a fluid in a subsea application.[0038] Furthermore, the invention concerns use of the sealed synthetic pipe as a velocity string inside a production tubing.[0039] A method of forming a string of pipe with segments of sealed synthetic pipe assemblies as described above is also disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: drilling a pattern of evenly spaced holes near the end sections of a pipe segment, fitting the threaded insert with the flange in each drilled hole from the inside of the end sections, securing the threaded insert with the threaded intermediate insert that is internally and 3498846externally threaded, inserting each end section into the connecting sleeve, and fixing the sleeve to each end section from the outside with a threaded mechanical fastener into each threaded intermediate insert.[0040] The tubular connecting sleeve may be secured to a conventional box end with inner threads connecting the pipe segment to a conventional steel pipe with a pin end.[0041] Furthermore, the invention concerns a use of a sealed synthetic pipe assembly as described above for conveying a fluid in a subsea application.[0042] Furthermore, the invention concerns a use of a velocity string inside a production tubing.Brief Description of Drawings[0043] Figure 1a is a longitudinal cross section of a single layer composite pipe segment with evenly spaced radial holes at each end;[0044] Fig. 1b is a transversal cross section of the pipe segment of fig. 1a;[0045] Figure 2 is a cross section of a hole fitted with a threaded insert with a flange;[0046] Figure 3 is a cross section of the hole fitted with a threaded insert with a flange and an internally and threaded intermediate insert;[0047] Figure 4 is a cross section of a single layer composite pipe segment with all the radial holes fitted with a threaded insert and an threaded intermediate insert as shown in fig. 3;[0048] Figure 5 is a cross section of the hole fitted with the threaded insert and the threaded intermediate insert shown in fig. 3, with a connection sleeve over the pipe segment;[0049] Figure 6 is a cross section of the hole of fig. 5 and a machine screw fixing the connection sleeve to the pipe segment;[0050] Figure 7 is a cross section of the ends of two pipe segments connected with a sleeved connection according to the invention; and[0051] Figure 8 is a cross section of the ends of two multi-layered pipe segments connected with a sleeved connection according to the invention. 3498847[0052] Figure 9 is a cross-section of a connecting sleeve over an pipe segment end section secured with bolts.[0053] Figures 10-13 are schematic representations of a sequence of a velocity string being installed into a subsea wellbore; and[0054] Figure 14 is a cross section of a multi-layered pipe segment connected to conventional steel pipe.Detailed description of the invention[0055] Figure 1a is a longitudinal cross section of a pipe segment 01 with a circular cross section and pipe end sections 01a and 01b with end section walls. The pipe segment 01 is made from a single layer composite material and includes evenly spaced, end section holes 02 at the pipe end sections 01a, 01b. The end section holes 02 typically have a longitudinal axis that is radial in relation to the circular cross section and perpendicular to a longitudinal axis A of the pipe segment 01. The diameter d of each hole 02 can be 1 to 2 times the wall thickness t of the pipe segment 01. The number of holes 02 at each pipe end section 01a, 01b is typically between 8 and 16. The holes are evenly spaced with 4 to 6 holes on each row (90 ° to 60 °s spacing on the circumference) and at a distance S, 0.5 to 2 times the outer diameter D of the pipe segment between each row. The drawing shows 3 rows at each end.[0056] Fig. 1b is a transversal cross section of the pipe segment showing the evenly spaced holes with 4 to 6 holes on each row with a 90-° spacing α on the circumference.[0057] Figure 2 is a cross section of one of the end section holes 02 shown in fig. 1, fitted with a threaded insert 03 with a flange 04 from the inside of the pipe segment 01. Threaded inserts are readily available in most sizes and are typically made of steel but can also be made of any suitable metal or composite material. Room for the flange 04 may be formed/machined to prevent the flange from protruding into the pipe segment 01 inner diameter by machining a recess 05 for the flange 04. A space for an O-ring 06 may be included in applications where the seal between the pipe segment 01 and the threaded insert 03 is critical and where the transition or interface between the pipe segment and the threaded insert cannot be sealed with a sealing compound.[0058] Figure 3 shows the end section hole 02 fitted with the threaded insert 03 and a threaded intermediate insert 07 that is internally and externally threaded. The threaded intermediate insert 07 includes a flange 08 and a space for an O-ring 09. The threaded 3498848intermediate insert 07 and the threaded insert 03 are held in placed by the opposing flanges 04, 08, reinforcing the end section hole 02 and providing a threaded hole for a threaded mechanical fastener, preferably a machine screw.[0059] Figure 4 shows the pipe segment 01 with all the radial holes fitted with the threaded inserts 03 and the threaded intermediate inserts 07. The pipe segment 01 is typically manufactured with inserts included. Fitting the threaded insert 03 from the inside of the pipe segment 01 may require a special tool and may be best performed during manufacture.[0060] Figure 5 shows the end section hole 02 fitted with the threaded insert 03 and the threaded intermediate insert 07. The connecting sleeve 10 is slipped over end section of the pipe segment 01. The connecting sleeve 10 includes holes 11 that match the holes 02 in the pipe segment 01. The connecting sleeve 10 can be made from steel or any material with high tensile strength. The high tensile strength allows the connecting sleeve 10 to have a thickness of about 10% to 30% of that of the pipe segment 01.[0061] Figure 6 corresponds to fig. 5. The connecting sleeve 10 includes a sleeve wall and is secured with a machine screw 12 with a countersunk head, screwed into the threaded intermediate insert 07 from the outside. The holes 11 in the connecting sleeve 10 are shaped to fit the machine screw 12 without external upset. For use in environments with big variation in temperature, the hole 11 in the connecting sleeve 10 can be slightly elongated to allow temperature expansion of the connecting sleeve 10, as the thermal expansion of steel and composite materials do not match.[0062] Figure 7 shows a pipe assembly of the invention with two pipe segments connected with the connecting sleeve 10 at their respective pipe end section 01a and 01b. The connecting sleeve 10 is secured to the threaded inserts 03 with the threaded intermediate inserts 07 located in the radial holes and fixed with machine screws 12.Each pipe end section 01a, 01b includes a circular end wall 14, and at least one sealing ring 13 is located between the circular end walls 14 of the two pipe end sections 01a, 01b.[0063] A ring-shaped gasket or sealing ring 13 between the pipe end section 01a and 01b may be omitted. The pipe end sections 01a and 01b are recessed to a diameter corresponding to an inner diameter of the connecting sleeve, and the connecting sleeve 10 is located in these recesses. An outer diameter of the connecting sleeve 10 is the same as an outer diameter of the pipe segments, thus forming a flush connection both on the inside and the outside of the connection. 3498849[0064] Figure 8 is a variation of the embodiment of figure 7, where the pipe end sections 01a and 01b are end sections of pipe segments with a multilayer composite pipe structure. A layered material may be difficult to machine, and drilling is often the easiest machining that can be done to a composite material pipe segment 01. Again, the connecting sleeve 10 is located in a recess 15 on the composite material pipe segment 01 and the recess has a diameter corresponding to an inner diameter of the connecting sleeve 10.[0065] Figure 9 shows the cross-section of the pipe segment 01 with the end section holes fitted with the threaded inserts 03 with flange and the threaded intermediate inserts 07, with connecting sleeve 10 fitted over pipe end section and secured with the machine screws 12. The threaded inserts 3 are closed at the end facing the inside of the pipe segment and the flange of the threaded insert is curved with a radius of curvature similar to the radius of the pipe segment to allow the shape of the flange to conform to the inner shape of the tube.[0066] Figure 10 shows an initial sequence of a velocity string being installed into a subsea wellbore in need of a velocity string. A specialised intervention vessel 16, arrives over a subsea well 17 and installs a blow-out preventer 18 on a well Christmas tree 19. A deep-set plug 20 is installed near the bottom of the production tubing 21 with wireline 22.[0067] Figure 11 shows progression in the sequence of installation. The specialised intervention vessel lowers a composite material velocity string 23 into the production tubing 21 with wireline 22. The velocity string 23 is secured in place with conventional velocity strig anchors 24a and 24b.[0068] Figure 12 shows further progression. The specialised intervention vessel retrieves the inner part of the deep-set plug 20a through the velocity string 23 whiles the outer part of the plug 20b is left in the well.[0069] Figure 13 shows the result of the installation. The specialised intervention vessel 16 leaves the well location with the velocity string 23 left in place.[0070] Figure 14 shows a synthetic pipe assembly with a of the invention with the multilayered pipe segment 01a connected to conventional steel 15 pipe with the method of the invention. The external connection extension tube is continued into a conventional threaded connection 14. It is optional to use gaskets 13a and 13b to obtain a seal between the composite material pipe segment 01 and the conventional steel pipe segment 15. This application of the invention is useful to connect the velocity string to conventional anchoring tools. It also provides the option to equip each composite material pipe section with a short conventional steel pipe at each end. The connection of this invention then becomes an 34988410internal connection for a pipe segment that is connected at well site into a string with conventional steel connections.[0071] The term threaded mechanical fastener is used to the describe a machine screw or a bolt and is used to describe the screw extending into the threaded insert. A machine screw is preferred as it has a head, followed by a threaded shank and then a flat tip. The head is preferably countersunk to maintain a flush outer surface of the sealed synthetic pipe with at the least two connected pipe segments.
