3491791TITLE: Holder for a wiper for cleaning drilling pipes, casings or production tubingField of the inventionThe present invention relates to a holder for a wiper for cleaning outer surfaces of 5 cylindrical objects, the wiper having a body with a periphery and a hole for receiving the cylindrical object. The present invention further relates to the use of such holder. Background of the inventionDuring pulling of pipes used during drilling of bore holes, the exterior or outside of 10 the pipes are covered with mud, debris, petroleum products etc. which are unwanted substances on deck of oil rigs, workover rigs, drilling ships, and other storage locations onshore and offshore. The fluid of debris might be toxic to the environment and operator and thus harmful to the operators handling the pulling. The operators in contact with the fluid or debris might get allergic reactions which are not acceptable.15 Tools for cleaning the exterior or outside surfaces of pipes used during drilling of bore holes offshore and in boreholes offshore exists. Such tools are called wipers. The wipers are placed outside a drilling pipe or tubing on drilling and/or workover rigs to clean off fluids or debris when the pipes are run or pulled out of the drilling hole.20 During workover or drilling of boreholes, pipes such as drill pipes, casings etc. are being withdrawn or temporarily withdrawn from the bore hole and stored at a rig, onshore or offshore. The pipes are withdrawn through a hole in the drill deck, and operators are monitoring and adjusting the pipes during the operation. There is a risk for the operators to be exposed to the fluid or debris not being washed or wiped off, 25 as the wipers rises through the drill deck. The wipers are typically formed as a circular disk with a central hole for receiving or threading onto the pipes or tubing and are typically made of a rubber material. The pipes or tubing are running through the wiper during cleaning and are picked down 30 and placed on deck of floating rigs. The wipers having two flat surfaces, that should be held orthogonal to the outer surface of the pipes or tubing, are often being tilted and thus wedged during operation at an angle to the surface of the pipes or tubing, resulting in an uneven cleaning of the surfaces. Hence, leaving areas of the surfaces 3491792of the pipes or tubing not cleaned, with stripes and areas of unwanted particles of fluids or debris after passing the wiper. The wiper might also get out of position, e.g. the wiper being tilted with respect to the 5 optimal position perpendicular to the pipes or couplings, thus less fluid or debris is removed, and when coupling the pipes or tubing off, the operators are exposed to the fluid or debris being a risk of unsafe operations.US2011/108278A1 describes a handheld pipe wiper and seals for wiping fluids and 10 solids off pipe sections of a string used in the drilling of a well. The pipe wiper is provided with handles so that it can be handled manually by drilling personnel. The pipe wiper comprises two or more elements hinged together, so that the pipe wiper can be opened and enclose the pipe and thereafter be closed around the pipe to form a generally cylindrical body enclosing the pipe as a clamshell.15There is a need to secure that the whole surface is cleaned or at least almost fully cleaned leaving only a very small number of unwanted particles left.Summary of the invention20 In the following throughout the specification, when referring to structural support system, this includes, but is not limited to, scaffolding, falsework, beams, bridges, staging, ski jumps and slopes and such, unless clearly specified otherwise. Moreover, in the following, the following terms mean:25 The noun term “wiper” refers to an element intended to be arranged threaded onto pipes, casings, or tubing in order to wipe off or remove any mud, fluid or debris from the outer/external surfaces the pipes, casing or tubing when pulling the pipes, casings, or tubing from a drilling hole. A “wiper” is typically made of a rubber material. The term “wiper” is a well-known expression in the oil and gas industry. 30The noun term “horizontal” refers to a direction perpendicular to the central axis/longitudinal axis of the pipes, casings, or tubing being pulled from the drilling hole, when passing the hole in the drill deck, and approximately parallel to the drill deck.35The noun term “vertical” refers to a direction perpendicular to the term “horizontal”. 3491793The noun term “cylindrical objects” refers to drill pipes, drill string, casings or tubing. The noun term “cylindrical part shell” refers to a part of a cylindrical shell. The 5 cylindrical part shell may be connected to one or more other “cylindrical part shells” forming substantially a cylinder, with space for example for connecting elements between the cylindrical part shells. The main object of the invention is to ensure a complete or at least almost complete 10 removal of fluid and/or debris from the outer surface of pipes, casing or tubing when pulling the pipes, casings, or tubing from a drilling hole.Another object of the invention is to ensure that the wiper is kept horizontal or at least approximately horizontal during pulling of the pipes, casings, or tubing from a 15 drilling hole.Yet another object of the invention is to ensure that the wiper is kept at an approximately fixed distance above the drill deck.20 A further object of the invention is to extend the operating time or lifetime of the wiper.Another object of the invention is to reduce the exposure of harmful environmental toxic products to the environment and/or operator when pulling the pipes, casings, or 25 tubing from a drilling hole.In a first aspect, the invention relates to a holder for a wiper for cleaning outer surfaces of cylindrical objects. The wiper has a body with a periphery and a hole for receiving the cylindrical object. The holder comprises a first means adapted to 30 holding the body of the wiper around its periphery and a second means adapted to maintain the periphery of the body of the wiper horizontal or at least approximately horizontal, in a substantially planar shape. This is to avoid tilting of the wiper, and to ensure that the outer surface of the cylindrical object is cleaned, or substantially cleaned. The first means comprises a plurality of cylindrical part shells connected to 35 each other with connecting means. The second means comprises radial teeth extending from the holder towards the cylindrical object when the holder is positioned for cleaning the outer surface of the cylindrical object. The teeth, in 3491794comparison to a continuous flange, ensures that wiper is held within the holder, reduced weight and increased flexibility which is important when positioning the holder around the wiper e.5 In embodiments, the holder comprises means for reducing exposure of material cleaned from the outer surface of the cylindrical object by the wiper, reducing splashing or squirt of fluid or debris out from the pipes or tubing. In embodiments, the means for reducing exposure of material cleaned from the outer 10 surface of the cylindrical object is a skirt extending from the holder opposite of a pulling direction of the cylindrical object relative to the holder. A skirt embraces the pipes of tubing, thus avoiding splashing or squirting of fluid or debris 360° around the pipes or tubing. In embodiments, the squirt can be made of two parts, or one part open in one end, where the openings are closed my suitable means.15In embodiments, the holder comprises means for collecting the material cleaned from the outer surface of the cylindrical object. Collecting the material reduces the environmental impact of the fluid or debris to the environment, for example the deck, the seawater below or from returning to the drill string or drill hole. Material collected 20 can be stored at suitable locations or transported to suitable means for cleaning off unwanted substances etc.In embodiments, the means for collecting the material cleaned from the outer surface of the cylindrical object is an enclosing trough. The fluid or debris is collected into the 25 trough being a receptacle to be emptied when moved or transported to suitable locations as mentioned above. In embodiments, the first means comprises a plurality of cylindrical part shells connected to each other with connecting means.30In embodiments, the holder comprises two cylindrical part shells and the connecting means comprises a first connecting part and a second connecting part.In embodiments, said first connecting parts are configured to interlock each other 35 forming said first connection and said second connecting parts are configured to interlock each other forming said second connection. 3491795In embodiments, at least one of said first or second connection is a releasable connection. Thus, the holder can be opened to embrace or to locate the holder around the cylindrical object, further the holder can be installed and deinstalled several times, and thus reused even if the wiper is worn and replaced.5In embodiments, one of said first or second connection is a flexible connection, such that the holder when opening the releasable connection can better flex to embrace or to locate the holder around the cylindrical object.10 In embodiments, the flexible connection is at least one of a group comprising a chain, a flexible material, a fibre reinforced polymer, and a hinge. In embodiments, the teeth is adapted to engage an upper and lower surface of the body of the wiper to ensure holding the wiper in position within the holder.15In embodiments, the teeth is adapted to engage at least a part of the periphery of the body of the wiper to ensure holding the wiper in position within the holder. In embodiments, the holder comprises at least three padeyes connected to at least 20 one from the group comprising an outer cylindrical surface, a top surface, and a bottom surface of said cylindrical part shells. The holder being kept at a distance from the drill deck by means of for example straps, chains, wires etc., where they are connected to the holder by use of the at least three padeyes in one end and to a suitable connecting point below the holder, thus extending from the holder opposite 25 of a pulling direction of the cylindrical object relative to the holder in the opposite end. The suitable connecting point may for example be at the opening for the pipe or tubing in the drill deck or other suitable points in the drill deck or below the drill deck. The straps or the like ensures that the holder is secured at a distance from the drill deck and kept at that distance by the pipes or tubing when pulling the pipes or 30 tubing. The operator can monitor the operation at a distance, thus reduce the risk of fluid or debris onto skin, eyes etc.In embodiments, the first means is made of one of the group comprising a flexible material, and a fibre reinforced polymer, which are flexible and light weighted35 compared to e.g. a metal material. 3491796In embodiments, the second means is made of one of the groups comprising a flexible material, and a fibre reinforced polymer, which are flexible, and light weighted compared to for example a metal material.5 In embodiments, said second means comprises a strengthening means, to strengthen the second means. In embodiments, said strengthening means is connected with connecting strengthening means forming a continuous protrusion between the strengthening 10 means. In embodiments, said strengthening means are covered with a rubber layer or coating reducing wear and tear and maintain the strengthening capacity of the strengthening means.15In embodiments, the releasable connection comprises a bolt and an adjustable nut, to be able to install the holder and deinstall the holder after use, the holder can be reused several times and to adjust the force of the holder around the cylindrical object.20In embodiments, the bolt is hinged on a pin and pivotable around the central axis of the pin.In embodiments, the bolt is made of nylon.25In embodiments, the fibre reinforced polymer is one of a glass fibre, carbon fibre, polymer fibre such as aramid, and mineral fibre such as basalt. In a second aspect, the invention relates to use of the holder.30The holder comprises of two circular part shells preferably hinged to each other or forming a continuous surface/wall in one end of the two halves. In alternative embodiments, the hinge may be a chain or a cycle chain. In the other end the two circular part shells are connected for example by means of one or more bolts and 35 nuts, where the bolt may be hinged by means of a pin. To install the holder, the operator simply opens the two halves where they are connected, by adjusting the bolts and nuts to install the holder around the wiper, providing simple and adjustable 3491797opening and tightening of the holder. The holder does not require any previous knowledge or extensive training to be installed. The holder is preferably made of a flexible material, or a fibre reinforced polymer. The holder is thus easy to handle during manual installation, providing a quick installation. The holder may be installed 5 as fast as within two minutes.Adjustable opening and tightening are also accommodating optimization of the wiping with regard to amount of fluid or debris on the pulled pipes or tubing.10 The two halves forming a circular assembly to embrace a wiper for cleaning of pipes or tubing being pulled up from a drill hole. The holder keeps the wiper in position or approximately in the right position, where the wiper, being a circular disk, kept orthogonal or near orthogonal position to the pipes or tubing, which is the ideal position to achieve optimal cleaning conditions. Hence, the wiper is exposed to less 15 wear and tear, which is a challenge without a holder keeping it in optimal position, where the wiper may take a slanted position in relation to the pipe or tubing. The wear and tear are thus reduced, and the operating time for the wiper is increased, and the wiper can also be reused. The wiper achieves better cleaning and reduces the need to further measures to clean the pipes or tubing and/or for the operator to 20 handle the dirty pipes or tubing. Thus, reducing the harmful environmental toxic products to the environment and/or operator.Inwardly projecting teeth are provided at the two cylindrical part shells, at least two teeth projecting inwardly from the top surface and bottom surface of the cylindrical 25 part shells, providing hold for the wiper, and a more flexible and bendable holder to ease installation and reduce weight compared to inwardly projecting flanges extending around the top and bottom surface of both of the two halves forming continuous flanges.Description of the figures30 Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the following figures, wherein:Figure 1a and 1b shows schematically a perspective of one embodiment of the holder of the invention.35 3491798Description of preferred embodiments of the inventionThe following description of the holder refers to the accompanying drawing.
