3494261A coolant system for electrical outboard motorsField of the inventionThe present invention relates to a coolant system for electrical outboard motors, 5 comprising a coolant tank for holding a liquid coolant, and a liquid coolant filler head, connectable to the coolant tank in the electrical outboard motor. Background of the inventionThe filler head according to the invention is intended for use in an outboard electrical 10 motor. It was developed to avoid the necessity of removing the fixed part of the cowling of the outboard motor every time one needed to fill/refill the battery coolant tank or motor coolant tank.By developing the filler head according to the invention, it could be placed in another 15 part of the motor, of easy access, making it easier to fill or refill the coolants tanks. At the same time, it is designed to eliminate the need for an expansion tank. The volume of the connected pipes and the filler head with for instance a funnel shaped boring replace (serve for the purpose of) the expansion tank, and is saving space in the outboard motor.20If the battery (or motor) is not properly cooled, they will exhibit operational limitations. They could overheat (for example) causing damage to the battery or the motor, or even stop working at all.25 Disclosure of the state of artCoolant tank level is controlled by means of a mechanical tank lever or sensors, i.e. the current solutions employ some mechanical tank lever or sensors to detect the escaping air flow or to monitor the back pressure of the cooling liquid or to measure the coolant level at the tank itself.30US 2023/0086934 A1 discloses an outboard motor having a power source, a tank storing cooling liquid, a heat sink cooling the cooling liquid, a cooling liquid passage connecting the power source and the heat sink, a pump causing the cooling liquid to flow in the cooling liquid passage, and a first housing part housing the heat sink. 35GB 2615841 A discloses a modular marine outboard electric motor. The motor comprises: a motor housing which encloses an electric motor. The motor housing is 3494262adapted to connect to a drive shaft housing which encloses a drive shaft connected to a coupler. The coupler is configured in use to transfer torque from the motor to the drive shaft. The drive shaft housing is adapted to connect to a gearbox housing which encloses a gearbox connected to an output shaft. Adjacent housings may be 5 connected one to another by quick release couplings.JP 2005-153727 A discloses an electrically driven outboard motor equipped with a supporting part to support the outboard motor on a hull and a motor room formed over the supporting part in such a way as covered with a motor cover, wherein the 10 arrangement includes an electric motor located inside the motor room, a battery to supply the electric power to the electric motor, and a control unit to control the number of revolutions etc. of the electric motor.JP H09–88585 A relates to an outboard motor cooling system and a cooling15 apparatus.WO 2023/084244 A1 discloses an outboard for a watercraft. The outboard has a body comprising a motor housing portion for housing an electric motor and a controller, and a closed cooling loop for cooling fluid to cool the electric motor and 20 the controller when housed in the motor housing portion.Objects of the present inventionIt is an object to develop a solution that ensures that a coolant tank is not overfilled, and that allows the fluid to expand due to heat, while preventing coolant liquid 25 leakage. The descending air outlet coil pipe terminates in the funnel neck of the filler head; hence, it prevents back feeding the air outlet coil pipe with coolant liquid during the filling procedure.30Also, by being coil shaped, the path between the connection with the air outlet pipe or hose and its termination within the inner part of the filler head is the longest possible. This adds an extra layer of “security” reducing the odds of any coolant liquid going into the air outlet pipe or hose and remaining there. It also prevents any 35 coolant liquid to remain in the air outlet coil pipe blocking the air escape (it will just flow out of the coil pipe due to gravity). 3494263Another technical advantage of the venting air outlet coil pipe terminating within the filler head is that it is protected by the closing cap (that closes the filler head) avoiding water (or anything else) going into the tank.5Summary of the inventionAccording to the invention, a coolant system for electrical outboard motors is provided, said system comprises a coolant tank for holding a liquid coolant, and a 10 filler head connected to said coolant tank for receipt and supply of coolant to the coolant tank, said filler head comprises a filler body with a filling aperture and a through running boring terminating in a coolant outlet connected to a coolant supply pipe running to the coolant tank. The system comprises further an air overflow pipe running from the coolant tank and to an air inlet in the filler head, said air inlet is 15 terminating within said through running boring allowing escape of overflow air from the coolant tank. The coolant supply pipe and the air overflow pipe are pipes, hoses, or any suitable lines for conveying liquid coolant or air.20The air inlet may further be accommodated in an air outlet coil pipe coiled around the filler body of the filler head. The air outlet coil pipe can be descending from the air inlet to the air escape aperture 25 in the through running boring. In the filler head according to the invention, the through running boring can be funnel shaped with a wider upper part than a lower part, and with an intermediate conical transition part.30The air escape aperture can be located in the conical transition part in the through running boring. The funnel shape of the through running boring can in one embodiment be angular, 35 in that said lower part is curved against the coolant outlet in the filler head. 3494264In a further embodiment, the through running boring can be funnel shaped with a wide upper part and a lower conical transition part being linear with the coolant outlet in the filler head.5 Further, the filler head may comprise a spill tray surrounding the filling aperture.Said spill tray can comprise a drainage pipe. The filler head may further comprise threads surrounding the filling aperture for receipt of a cap, such as a header swirl pot cap.10Description of the figuresEmbodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the following figures, wherein:Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a first embodiment of a filler head.15 Figure 2 shows a front view of the filler head shown in fig.1.Figure 3 shows a side view of the filler head shown in fig.1.Figure 4 shows a top view of the filler head shown in fig.1.Figure 5 shows a cross-sectional view of the filler head shown in fig.1.Figure 6 shows a system with the filler head shown in fig.1, in cross-sectional 20 view, connected a to liquid coolant tank.Figures 7 and 8 show a cross-sectional view of a second embodiment of the filler head.Figure 9 shows a system with the filler head shown in fig.7 and 8, in crosssectional view, connected a to liquid coolant tank.25 Figure 10 shows a perspective view of a third embodiment of the filler head.Figure 11 shows a front view of the filler head shown in fig.10.Figure 12 shows a side view of the filler head shown in fig.10.Figure 13 shows a top view of the filler head shown in fig.10.Figure 14 shows a cross-sectional view of the filler head shown in fig.10. 30 Figure 15 shows a system with the filler head shown in fig.10, in crosssectional view, connected a to liquid coolant tank.Description of preferred embodiments of the inventionThe filler head 20 is a liquid coolant filler head 20 connectable to a coolant tank 10 35 for electrical outboard motors. For all the embodiments of the invention, the filler head 20 comprises a filler body 30 with a filling aperture 38 and through running and funnel shaped boring 26 terminating in a coolant outlet 22 connectable to a coolant 3494265supply pipe 12 running to a coolant tank 10, and an air inlet 24 on the filler head 20 connectable to an air overflow pipe 14 running from the coolant tank 10. The air inlet 24 is terminating within said through running boring 26 allowing escape of overflow air flowing from the coolant tank 10 and out the filling aperture 38.5The coolant supply pipe 12 and the air overflow pipe 14 can be any pipes, hoses or suitable lines for conveying liquid coolant 42 or air.The filler head 20 has a funnel shaped neck that increases the fluid speed, and therefore decreases its pressure. The air inlet 24 is terminating within said through 10 running and funnel shaped boring 26 through a descending air outlet coil pipe 28 in the funnel neck of the filler head 20, hence, it prevents back feeding the air outlet coil pipe 28 with coolant liquid during the filling procedure, while it prevents any liquid to remain in the air outlet coil pipe 28 blocking the air escape.15 As the tank is filled, by means of the filling aperture 38, the coolant liquid 42 passes by the funnel shaped neck and leaves the filler head 20 at its base by means of the coolant supply pipe 12 towards the coolant tank 10. Therefore, the coolant level rises within the coolant tank 10 compressing the air inside the tank. The pressure will increase until the air escapes the coolant tank 10 in its upper position towards the 20 inner part of the filler head 20, by means of the descending air outlet coil pipe 28, and then it escapes out by the filling aperture 38. As the air tries to escape out by the filling aperture 38 it goes against the liquid coolant that is entering the funnel neck and makes it harder for the coolant liquid to reach the base of the filler head 20. This phenomenon indicates that an optimum filing level has been reached. Also, when the 25 user sees the air bubbles the user knows that an optimum level has been reached. When the cooling system is working, the coolant liquid will expand due to the heat (absorbed from the battery or the motor). The extra volume of the system obtained with the connected coolant supply 12 and air overflow 14 pipes, and the funnel 30 shaped boring 26 allows the coolant liquid to expand due to heat, while preventing it from leaking. As shown in figures 1-6, in a first embodiment, the filler head 20 comprises a filler body 30 (filler neck) with an internal through running and funnel shaped boring 26. 35 The boring 26 is divided into a wider upper part 26a with the filling aperture 38 and a narrower lower part 26c. A conical transition part 26b is arranged intermediate between the upper part 26a and the lower part 26c. The air inlet 24 is terminating by 3494266the air escape aperture 24b in said through running boring 26, wherein the air escape aperture 24b is located on the internal wall in said conical transition part 26b. The air escape aperture 24b can possibly be shaped like a slit in the internal wall of the through running boring 26.5The filler body 30 of the filler head 20, and hence the through running boring 26 is angular shaped with said lower part 26c being curved against the coolant outlet 22 in the filler head 20. The angle can for instance be 90º. As shown in figure 5, the internal diameter of the coolant outlet 22 is narrower than the internal diameter of the 10 lower part 26c of the boring 26.The air inlet 24 is located in an upper part of the filler body 30 of the filler head 20, and the air inlet 24 comprises a boring 24a coiled around the through running boring 26 in the filler head 20 prior to terminating in the air escape aperture 24b in the 15 through running boring 26. More specifically is the boring 24a of the air inlet 24 accommodated in the air outlet coil pipe 28 coiled around the filler body 30 of the filler head 20. The air outlet coil pipe 28 is descending from the air inlet 24 to the air escape aperture 24b in the through running boring 26. The air outlet coil pipe 28 is clearly shown in particularly figures 2 and 3.20When filling coolant liquid there is a chance of spilling the liquid. The filler head 20 is therefore preferably equipped with a spill tray 32 surrounding the filling aperture 38. The spill tray 32 can comprises a drainage pipe 34 for drainage of spilled liquid coolant.25The lower part of the filler head 20 is preferably equipped with a fixation support 40 for mounting of the filler head 20.Figure 6 shows a system with the angular filler head 20 connected to the coolant 30 tank 10. The coolant supply pipe 12 is running from the coolant outlet 22 in the lower part of the filler body 30 of the filler head 20 and to the coolant tank. The air overflow pipe 14 is running from an upper part of the coolant tank 10 and to the air inlet in the upper part of the filler body 30 of the filler head 20, allowing air to escape out through the filler aperture 38 as disclosed above.35Figures 7 and 8 show a second embodiment of filler head 20. The filler head 20 is similar shaped as the filler head of the first embodiment, except that the internal 3494267diameter of the coolant outlet 22 has a corresponding diameter to the internal diameter of the lower part 26c of the boring 26. As shown in figure 9 the filler head 20 is in a similar manner connected to the coolant tank 10. The coolant supply pipe 12 is running from the coolant outlet 22 in the lower part of the filler body 30 and to 5 the coolant tank. The air overflow pipe 14 is running from an upper part of the coolant tank 10 and to the air inlet in the upper part of the filler body 30 of the filler head 20, allowing air to escape.A third embodiment is shown in figures 10-15. The main part of the filler head 20 is similar shaped as previously disclosed.10The filler head 20 comprises a filler body 30 with an internal through running and funnel shaped boring 26. The internal boring 26 is divided in a wide upper part 26a with the filling aperture 38 and a lower conical transition part 26b connected with the coolant outlet 22. The air inlet 24 is terminating by the air escape aperture 24b in 15 said through running boring 26, wherein the air escape aperture 24b is located on the internal wall in said conical transition part 26b. The air escape aperture 24b can possibly be shaped like a slit in the internal wall of the through running boring 26.The filler body 30 of the filler head 20, and hence the through running boring 26 is 20 linear shaped. The through running boring 26 is funnel shaped with the wide upper part 26a and the lower conical transition part 26b being linear with the coolant outlet 22 in the filler head 20.The air inlet 24 is similarly located in the upper part of the filler body 30 of the filler 25 head 20, and the air inlet 24 comprises a boring 24a coiled around the through running boring 26 in the filler head 20 prior to terminating in the air escape aperture 24b in the through running boring 26. The boring 24a of the air inlet 24 is accommodated in the air outlet coil pipe 28 coiled around the filler body 30 of the filler head 20. The air outlet coil pipe 28 is descending from the air inlet 24 to the air 30 escape aperture 24b in the through running boring 26. The air outlet coil pipe 28 is clearly shown in particularly figures 11 and 12.The filler head 20 is similarly preferably equipped with a spill tray 32 surrounding the filling aperture 38, and which comprises a drainage pipe 34 for drainage of spilled 35 liquid coolant. 3494268As shown in figure 15 the filler head 20 is in a similar manner connected to the coolant tank 10. The coolant supply pipe 12 is running from the coolant outlet 22 in the lower conical transition part 26b of the filler body 30 and to the coolant tank 10. The air overflow pipe 14 is running from an upper part of the coolant tank 10 and to 5 the air inlet 24 in the upper part of the filler body 30 of the filler head 20, allowing air to escape. The downwards arrows in figures 6, 9 and 15 indicates filling of liquid coolant, and the upwards arrows indicates air escape.10The filler head 20 comprises in all embodiment threads 36 surrounding the filling aperture 38 for receipt of a cap, such as a header swirl pot cap.During filling of liquid coolant, the funnel shaped through running boring 26 is 15 preferably filled up to at least the conical transition part 26b to be most effective. In alternative embodiments (not shown) the through running boring 26 can be funnel shaped all the way from the filling aperture 38 and to the coolant outlet 22. The through running boring 26 may further be funnel shaped from the wider upper part 26 20 and to the coolant outlet 22, or the through running boring 26 can be funnel shaped from the conical transition part 26b and to the coolant outlet 22. Hence, the wider upper part 26a and the lower part 26c can possibly also be funnel (conical) shaped. An advantage with the filler head 20 is that it has a coolant supply pipe 12 and an air 25 overflow pipe 14 that makes it is easier to fill the coolant tank 10 with the coolant liquid compared to filler heads that only have one pipe, in which the coolant liquid goes enters, and the air is “fighting” to come out.
